The Great Eland Debate

Do we have to discuss this further? Afterall the last thread was so much fun.

I'm sure you were able to find a bunch of guys to back up your opinion, but I think it's pretty stupid to raise the issue again. You go ahead to Africa, shoot one then bring back the pics. Until then why don't we just let this go.

:agree:

One time it would appear we're in agreement Martinbns. This guy wants something SSSOOOOOO bad he's running all over he11s creation seeing who's selling security blankets... Yet he's quoted from another thread in my sig line as saying something which( correct me if I'm wrong) would seem to say, use a gun to where there is no debate. Or atleast thats what I take from it. Yet every time he talks about this safari its all about justification. Like I just dont get ya man

I have a good friend that has done great work on elk with a 22-250 for quite a few years. It penetrates well enough to hit the brain or the spine at the base of the skull. I am sure that a 7x57 or a 30-06 with the right stuff can penetrate 2 ft with the right bullet out to 250yds.

If you read into the thread a little, i am pretty sure he has more than enough gun for himself. He is discussing (i was going to say ask, but that's not what is really going on here)the mreits of the '06 for his lady friend, who i am sure might not be quite recoil tolerant for anything much bigger than the
'06. Besides, these are discussion boards, if we can't discuss things like this then what the hell good is it.

IMO, it beats the hell out of another 7mm thread.

Agreed, but like the 7MM threads when do we say we've covered it? I know its not taken the title the same way each time but it has been covered with countless replies on here and according to him every where else he might show up. So when do you have the info to tackle an eland with given cartridge or say no I cant with this cartridge? What 4 months after he returns. I mean love of God the guys got his info by now on the given gun or he's not mentally fit for international travel.
-Get your info
-go on trip
-Shoot
-Come home
krist already

I'll take your for it...lol :)
theres a freebee. I know your talkin bout me and not jug head with the sheep:D As that GD eland dead yet? khrist by the time the ####tin and squakins done and the huntin starts they'll be extinct already. Hey one guy did have the spear idea. Good one. Sheep*unter, when you get there get yourself an eekwha from some zulu local and go tackle the biggest eland you can find:dancingbanana:

SH thanks for pointing me to this thread now this is what I needed to cure my boredom... :D

Myself I wouldn't go after an eland with anything less than the new Ruger 416 Ruger (that I haven't bought yet but am seriously considering getting for big bear defense here in BC because we have so many huge bears and they are the harderst bears in the world to stop unlike them little Alberta bears that can be stopped with only a 308 or 30-30) and if the shots were long my 375RUM with 300gr Sierra Gamekings @ 2800fps.

Here's a thought to go into the "what I've learnt on CGNTZ" thread the ignore list is useless cause someone always comes along that I'm not ignoring and quotes the moron I'm ignoring so I see the post anyway then my curiosity kicks in and then I have to look anyway...

So I don't ignore anyone anymore it makes me miss out on too much fun...

I've now learnt not to call those that I know are morons "morons" any longer its not worth getting the mods on my back telling me that I have another infraction even though they are the ignorant morons (not refering to the mods but too the morons) I have ever had the displeasure of communicating with... :D

No problem, glad to help out.

I'm okay with missing out on the that kind of fun.....guess I'm just not as bored as you.....

I spend over 6 months on and off every year in remote wilderness areas in BC and lately Alberta I'm thinking I am suffering from a major case of cabin fever even though I just got back 2 weeks ago from a month in Alberta...

Perhaps off the subject, but eland related. The chest walls on the eland that I shot, others that I watched being cut up and a walk-in cooler full of cull-shot, bound for the market carcasses are suprisingly thick. The big eland bulls have more meat to penetrate on a rib shot than a bull elephant does. There is the matter of 5/8" of skin and heavier ribs with the elephant but it is still interesting. The eland have the typical African 2 chambered lung, where the elephant have a single chambered lung that is attached to the body cavity, probably to stop them from collapseing under their own weight. It looks kinda weird. The fun you can have with a gutpile is endless.
Try to get the front-lungs on your shot, just getting the back ones will make your day long.

I have a friend that killed an Eland with a bow. After reading this post I don't even know how that would be possible?
