THE great Marstar update thread.

I agree with the facebook is for 13 year old girls, besides, people I went to highschool have no business knowing that I gave Johns sks's a 'THumbs up' etc... Your own sticky makes the most sense.

John 1 has 58,000 lbs of surplus .308 ammo coming in

THIS IS ONLY A JOKE>>>THERE IS NO AMMO COMING<<<< AS FAR AS I KNOW ANYWAY

For what it's worth, while I may be in the minority here on CGN, I do think that twitter is a very effective and efficient way for businesses to update customers.

A sticky is only good for Marstar's customers that frequent CGN and check the sticky on a regular basis.

No John!

TWITTER and FACEBOOK are for teenage girls who want to know what their classmates are eating or doing at 7:49 on saturday... FFS even UFC goes Twitter WTF...

Please keep the updates on the forum. Its our little corner of the internet!

LOL I agree. A marstar only string would be fantasic, I'm ussually the last one to know of new stock. THE LAST ONE!!!

I value your opinions, we are looking at several project this summer....
We have been asked by a few people to do some videos of the weaponry we work with, ie "instructional" videos....

Any interest out there ?? They would include all the automaics we work with....
John

As long as you keep all your clothes on I'll watch any videos you post! :p

The same applies to a Twitter feed as well, though. Infact even more so. The odds are that a greater percentage of Marstar's customer base use CGN regularly as opposed to Twitter. It can be a great tool for a customer base that is inclined to use it in their day to day lives already, but in Marstar's case I think it would provide less benefit than distributing the information through a community like ours. It is certainly easier when you're in a gunstore or at the range to talk about something you read on CGN rather than Twitter, too.

That being said, it's not like there isn't room for improvement in how information is delivered currently. The best way would just be to make the website a little more intuitive and have everything presented in a more organised fashion. Right now, I regularly check the Used Firearms, Special Clearance, Unique Firearms, Online Specials, Expected Delivery Dates and New Items sections of the website. The first three or four of those are pretty well redundant and could easily be merged into something more intuitive that more people would see.

I don't know if I would be considered something of a fanatic (as if that word could possibly describe anyone on this site ;) ) for checking all of those pages but it has seemed like that is the thing to do if you want to catch everything that pops up on the site.

Depending on how much information John wants to put on the site then New Items could also be streamlined to include the sort of information we get here on the forum in addition to updates on new items in stock. A general update page, so to speak.

However, I do enjoy going to bed at night with the warm feeling from knowing I will wake up in the morning and check this subforum to see what tidbits John has thrown our way or who had the cajones to bring up some question that has been asked a zillion times already, before the aforementioned proprietor and esteemed gentleman has had his coffee.

So I would personally prefer to keep the personal interaction with Marstar that we get through this forum intact and make it easier for those who don't check in very often by having something akin to an updates thread that is stickied and locked to only allow John or a designated minion to post in it. That system has the benefit of putting the information infront of people without them having to read long, rambling tangential posts like this one.

I applaud you if you made it this far and, ignoring my feelings on the matter, organising the website to provide similar information to what we receive here would be the way to go. And as for Facebook, well, I think ViktorF illustrated my feelings on that quite well.

IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED that we go Tweeter and Facbook, what say you ??
John

TWEET YOU!!! Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

I would say that I'm a watcher of this site first, dealer websites second.

Facebook a very far and distant tenth on my list of priorities.

Twitter? Isn't that from the Bambi movie? 'nuff said.

If you were to produce some instructional DVDs for basic assembly/disassembly and maintenance of some of the more popular firearms in Canada (of which I'm sure you need only consult your sales history to determine - as well as the obvious Enfields, Mausers, etc.) then I'm sure you would be able to move some units without hassle. It depends, I guess, on how indepth you want to go with the information provided in the videos. If I can drone on about the website again then obviously you have the venue for promoting and selling these quite effectively. Makes a good promotional or bonus item too.

Piracy would be an issue to consider but there are enough honest (or technically challenged :p) Canadian gun owners out there that it wouldn't be a huge concern. It would likely be offset by the fact it's a Canadian production from a company that is familiar to most Canadian gun owners. There are outfits in the US that exist solely to market videos of this nature but I know which one I'd buy from first.

Alright. I think I'm done for now. Can anyone tell how bored I am tonight? And no, I'm not under the illusion that I'm saying anything John hasn't heard already..

I have to disagree there. I've lived in four countries and maintain active contacts in all of them via Facebook. I find it invaluable and check it very regularly. I would certainly use that as my medium of choice for keeping an eye on updates.

Twitter though, I cannot find any purpose for.

Could not agree more, i find it indispensable for keeping in touch with a far flung social circle and i definitely keep an eye on it at least once or twice a day.

Here's the deal. I bought something from Marstar once and he threw in a TOP SECRET link to a list of online video manuals. I'll share it with you CGN'rs.

www.youtube.com

sssh.
Yes, there is of course that. But as long as the cost of actually producing the videos is low (which it should be), I think it would still generate some money. There are people who don't clean their guns infront of their computers (or have their computers hooked up to the TV, which is my solution :p) and some who don't even have computers but might like something simpler than a paper manual.

Obviously as Marstar is an online retailer, those people in the latter category would probably get the DVDs from their local gunstore but still. And of course the Norinco videos would have to be as full of hilariously out of place and politically incorrect segments as their manuals. ;)

On the subject of Facebook and Twitter again, I suppose it doesn't really cost anything to have a presence there so any money generated from it would be a bonus. However I don't think that anyone who follows Marstar through those services wouldn't be just as likely to follow other ways. The potential viral aspect of something like Facebook also probably wouldn't account for much as compared to the existing methods things are passed from one person to another... at gun stores, shows, the range and places like CGN. To be honest, John could disappear from here completely and we'd probably keep each other updated on the major stuff (new items, etc.) just fine.

I have triggers and bows on my facebook and find it great when they have sales and deals

People could also stop asking John the same questions everyday and just wait for him to post an update when a new item comes in... With all the time John would save not repeating himself he could probably bring in 70,000 sks's and various containers of Norinco products

PERHAPS I was not clear, the videos we are looking at putting together would be free, no purchase required....

We thought perhaps those who cannot own certain firearms might be interested in seeing how they function etc, etc....

Like something on the 1910 water cooled Maxim, the .303 Vickers, Yugo M-84, etc, etc....

Just an idea
John

If you're looking for an excuse to get some more range time with them, then yes, this is a great idea. ;)
