The greatest .22 that ever was

Beautiful job on the trigger guard! Only way it could be better would be to have it colour case hardened. Great work.

Funny you should say that... Haha. The thought has crossed my mind. But I like how it matches the barrel and receiver now. The only case hardened parts I can see are the trigger, sear, bolt handle, and action screw posts. The wear parts basically.

I have wanted to try color case hardening though... Maybe I'll make another one one day, and case harden it so I have options lol.

I believe this thread has single handedly increased demand for this gun! I know it has for me. Just had a line of sight on one snuffed from under me through a third party used firearm site. Wonder who got it?

In reference to the OP's title, he should lay his hands on a JM Marlin 39A!

I'm sure it has, I know I was thinking about that Tbolt a couple hours ago, but how many .22's do I really need. I' think I'll take my 151 to the range next trip.

I've owned a couple 39's over the years. One was from the 50's and another from the 80's. Beautiful rifles! I bought them and cleaned them up, shot them a bit... But I was spending a lot of time at the 100m range and being used to precision bolt actions I got frustrated with the long range accuracy. The best either would do was 3-4" at 100m and about an inch and a half at 50m. Couldn't bring myself to scope them. Great guns though, I really can't knock them. Rock solid, reliable and pretty accurate considering the crude iron sights. But I sold one to pay for a BSA international ISU and another so I could buy a CZ Scout and scope package.

I've had a couple of Mossbergs over the years. They are great rifles. Got rid of them for one reason or another. Something shiny and new caught my eye I guess.

This thread has got me thinking about looking for another. I always did like a tube magazine

That is correct! One sold within a couple of hours on the EE this morning. $150 without sights

Another one that has been restored, only needs MikeySs trigger guard magic:

I will never sell my mossbergs but I just gave my hunting partners 11 year old daughter who is just starting out coming hunting with us a nice old bolt action mossberg....the gun is at least 60 years older than she is but she can knock the head off a grouse with it very adroitly-I see it as passing on the heritage

Thank you for this thread, I think it's long overdue that people realized just how awesome the old mossberg rifles are. Heck, my 46b will smoke my cz 455! Makes me smile everytime. It's never going anywhere. There's a 42m and 46m looking at me like they want to spend some time outside all of the sudden:)

My pleasure Aaron. Mine smoked my CZ 452 by a noticeable margin as well. In fact, like I said earlier in the thread it's on par with the BSA intl ISU I owned which is a purpose built competition benchrest rifle. And this thing is a sporter?! Is bizzare accurate.

Honestly I'm quite happy to keep these things our little secret, though I guess the cat is somewhat out of the bag now hey.... I'd hate to see the prices go up on them because the value for the money is part of what makes them so phenomenal.

I've been putting Williams sights (same as the cz) on my mossbergs for a while now. Personally I prefer them over the factory ones~ mostly because I can see them lol
