The Gun Case Thread

IMG_1788.jpg
Cow Town Bill, it would be great to see more pictures of your Westley Richards. Ashcroft posted some pictures of his Westley Richards not long ago and it looks absolutely stunning. I can't imagine what it is like getting to take a gun like that out in the field.

I shoot all my guns and hunt with most of them. I am particular about weather conditions and prefer warm sunny days to shoot my fine guns.
I attach another upside down picture (so sorry) of the WR. It was re case coloured by Oscar in NS with Martin Hagn adding a few touches. It has a single trigger and WR were noted for this feature and it works perfectly.

The proper material is wool baize (not pool table felt), but in this case its the original lining. Seems different because the original photo from the vendor had a different colour saturation. To clean it up I used a paint brush with the case upside down then umpteen pieces of packing tape. Hopefully we will see others in this thread showcasing their re-lining work.

Can you elaborate on using a paint brush---did you use some type of water colour? I have used lots of duct tape, or similar tape, to give a finishing touch to a case.
Do you have a Canadian source for baize---I have located it in England and is pricey---as such I have used pool table felt.

CASED HELLIS 20 Gauge

DSCN2720.jpgDSCN2721.jpgThis leather case contains a 20 ga Hellis boxlock ejector built in 1907. The brass plate on the case hides a previous owner's name carved into the leather cover---apparently this was common practice at that time.

Bill, by paintbrush I just meant that they are useful to give the material a gentle brushing to remove debris. Keeping the case upside down gives a gravity assist. The brush gets into areas most vacuum attachments won't. Hairs, lint, and the like, get removed by tape.
Sorry, I don't have a source for baize. Perhaps someone else will weigh in on that.

Removing debris, dog hairs, lint, loose dirt is quite straightforward. My biggest problem in vintage cases has been oil staining, usually dirty stains. I've tried a variety of marvelous modern cleaners and have yet to discover anything that will clean the wool baize without spreading the stain, damaging the cloth or loosening the glue. Does anyone have the answer? I'm looking for a proven product for this purpose, I'm done with experimenting.

This one dates back to 2019. A simple take down case from Galco.

Thanks John, that's a resource that I overlook too often. So now I have some product names, I'll research these and see if any are available in Canada. Pretty sure anything with carbon tet will be a challenge in today's 'real' world.

That Galco case is a really nice looking modern leg of mutton case Victory XC. Browning had a similar one for a number of years (brown of course). I've never seen the Galco version before.

Well, the beginning post said show your original cases so thought I'd tone it down a bit and show a rare poor boy's case. Actually, by the material, it looks to be fairly modern, and by the number of them around I don't think it's rare either. Some of you may have 0ne or two laying around. But it is original and does the trick!! Just gotta figure out how to put a handle on it. Have a case coming from Ashcroft though so this might get a new home!

Another circa 2019 case. This one is a Thomas Ferney. A well made case that includes leather trim, leather topped storage compartment, locking side hinges, luggage straps, two piece gun sock and outer slip cover.

Here is a not-so-recent case, a two-tiered leather covered case with the label of Thomas Robert Hasdell (150 St John Street Road, Clerkenwell, London 1862-1866). The case clasps and other fittings are identical to the Lancaster case; case builders, implement makers etc. were a separate side business supplying the gun trade, and not surprisingly the same cases show up in the offerings of many different makers.

The gun, not original to the case, is a 12-bore single-bite underlever pinfire by Joseph Lang (22 Cockspur Street, London), the man that introduced the pinfire gun to Britain. This now quite worn example was delivered to J. M. Hasel Esq., on 7 August 1867 (from the maker’s records).

Among the CGN crowd it seems like many have cases that are one or two degrees of separation from each other with Ashcroft most times in there somewhere. In show us your sxs and o/u's, Canvasback displays a double leather custom takedown case that came from me and I got it from Ashcroft. In this thread VictoryXC shows a soft case that came from Canvasback. Ashcroft shows a case that came from Cowtown Bill. I sold a leg of mutton to NormanMcLean and quite sure he has a whack of vintage cases from other CGN members.
True to form this one came to me from Ashcroft. I don't know what to put in it so wondering if anyone has similar that is associated with any particular maker. Perhaps its an aftermarket and rather generic(?)
