The Gun Case Thread

Hey gun case experts, I need some advice. I got a leg-o-mutton case in a purchase deal with my Nimrod. The case is in pretty good condition but has some stains. I assume these are from water. Is there any way to dye or colour it darker without wrecking it? Id like it to be a richer brown and hope to mute those stains.

Yes, absolutely you can do a great job of masking the water stains with dye. You want Fiebings Professional Oil Leather dye. I'll try to find before and after photos.

We used to have access to Fiebings at my former work, but it was black. Came in a bottle with a horse on the label as I recall? Had a application ball on a wire attached to lid?
I remember if you got it on your hands, it was there for a long time!

Same stuff? That bottom case looks great BTW.
 
Same company. You wouldn't have to go nearly so dark in colour as I did unless you want to. Wear nitrile gloves! It goes on more evenly if you lightly oil the leather first, for instance wiping with a cloth sprayed with Ballistol. You can apply the dye with a rag or those cotton make-up remover pads. After it dries it won't bleed on things anymore but an application of conservator's wax gives it a nice sheen. There's a leather shop in Hamilton or you might find it at Michael's or else order from Amazon - their supplier is in Montreal.

Just finished dying it. I was pensive at first and worried it would darken it too much or leave streaks, but after a bit, I just slathered it on. I roughed up the surface with 0000 steel wool to help it penetrate the shiny coating on the leather. After it dries, I will go over it with saddle soap to lift the residual dye and then wax it up a bit to hopefully seal it. thanks for the tips guys.
 
With 5,400 views and terrific contributions from so many members I am very proud to have been a starting contributor to this thread. It really should be a sticky for this forum. Not sure why not designated as such already but I try to bump it from time to time.

Londonshooter, what colour is the dye you used on the case you showed? They have many shades of brown. Also, how much did it take to do the one case? They have 4 oz and 32 oz containers.

Hi Jim.
That one is called chocolate. A 4 ounce bottle dyed 2 cases with two coats. I was amazed, actually, how well that product worked.
