I picked up this pistol off the EE this week and even though I owned one in the past I thought it was a good time for a fresh look. First—a little history. This pistol was designed by Heckler & Koch in the early 1990s in response to the United States Special Operations Command’s (US SOCOM) Offensive Handgun Weapon System (OHWS) competition. The intention was to deliver a handgun that could be used as a primary weapon in place of a rifle, not just one intended for defensive or secondary use like the M9. As part of the reliability testing, the pistol went through a 30,000 round endurance test using +P .45ACP ammunition, and the completed package delivered in 1996 included a suppressor and laser aiming module.

Now, onto my version (no suppressor or LAM, unfortunately). The only real differences between the civilian “Mark 23” and the military “MK 23” are the finish and roll marks on the slide. It’s for sure a big pistol (you’ll see it jokingly referred to as a “crew served pistol”) but let’s have a closer look.

Here it size-wise with my 4” GP100, which most people wouldn’t consider to be an overly large handgun.

And here are the weights of the two guns—the GP100 actually weights a smidge more!

Trigger reach in DA mode is a little bit of a stretch for me, but no worse than my Beretta 92F.

The Beretta’s grip is actually a bit thicker, too.

So, no question it’s big gun, but manageably so. Now, let’s have a closer look at the pistol itself.

At it’s heart, it’s a basic polymer-framed Browning-style tilting barrel design, not one of H&K’s more unique designs like the P7 or P9S. The rear sight is a sturdy steel sight with two dots.

And the front is similarly robust. The sights are elevated to allow for their use when a suppressor is mounted.

Somewhat usually, the barrel is chrome-lined.

The front of the grip has aggressive checkering, and in this picture you can also see the typical H&K paddle-style magazine release (it’s ambidextrous) and the nicely grooved trigger. H&K’s mag release is the my all-time favourite (my Walther P99 has a similar one). I can easily reach it with my trigger finger without changing my grip. The DA trigger is really heavy, like maybe 12 pounds or more, due to the strong hammer spring, but the SA pull, while still a little on the heavy side, is nice and crisp with just a bit of overtravel.

You can see the threaded hole in the front of the trigger guard for the LAM, as well as its non-standard mounting groove on the frame.

.

There’s an unusual control on the left side of the frame. In front of the smallish 1911-style safety there’s a separate decocker. Apparently this is because the original design requirement was to have both. The decocker does allow for the pistol to be decocked more quietly than a slide-mounted safety like the Beretta 92, which just drops the hammer.

The larger size of the Mark 23 detracted from using it as a more defensive pistol, and as response H&K developed the USP line of pistols for more conventional usage. You can see the family resemblance with my USP .40.

Here are the barrels and recoil assemblies. Near the front of the Mark 23 barrel you can see its green rubber o-ring, which helps center the barrel in the slide, supposedly contributing to increased accuracy.

There’s a dramatic difference, too, in the internal parts. Look at that robust ejector! The braided spring is the trigger bar spring.

I’m a big fan of H&K’s classic pistols and this was the last one I was missing. I’m looking forward to taking it out!

I bought a brand new one ( the early 90 model i was BNIB, It have become THE pistol i would fecth first, just after my Korth Combat. I think the Mk 23 is the ultimate combat pistol. And accuracy wise with the the 185 gr HP +P @ 1250 fps is on par with at least a Les Baer.

I had one in my hands and it was too huge for me. It just didn't feel right. I settled on my HK45 and couldn't be happier with it. I found the grip on the hk45 felt more natural

I didn’t realize you sold your last one Master-G. I remember your video of it. Glad to see you found a very nice specimen. Another great pictorial and review. Thank you!
Thanks! Yeah, after my cataract surgery three years ago I sold it and bought an RMR-sighted FNX45 Tactical. The FN was an accurate, easy-shooting pistol but I hadn't had it out to the range in more than two years so when I saw the Mark 23 come up for sale I realized that you don't see them very often and that it was a good time to fill the last gap in my HK collection.

Same happened to me a few week ago Master-G.

I've owned a couple of Mk 23's, the first one being an early 1996 version, one of the first 400 to be manufactured with the "Mark 23" small caps markings and Martime "glossy" finish that came in an Eagle Camo soft case with 3 mags and goodies. IIRC I paid less than $1500 for it back in 2000, brand new from a dealer that had it for years on a shelf. Shot it extensively, probably 10-15k rounds (that was my sole .45 at the time) for over 9 years till I sold it in 2009 when I first join CGN.

The bug bit me again a couple years later and I got a new one in 2013, by then I had multiple .45's and not enough time to enjoy them all so I sold it a year later unfired. The guy I sold it too let me break her in at the range with a few boxes of his factory ammo, AE 230gr FMJ IIRC. Not 100% sure, I would need to find my old certificate but the one JP bought could be the one I originally bought, it's the same date code (BC = 2012) and serial looks very close to the one I had back then, FYI the pistol still looked brand new after 200 rounds fired though. As you wrote Master-G, very few of these come up for sale, they are often the same pistols that are sold over and over again since very few are floating around up here.

So, a few weeks ago I saw one at an online auction, a BH coded (2017) brand new unfired in factory hard case with goodies. I've decided to place a bid when the auction came online and won it. I'm stoked with the deal, I should get it within a couple weeks if the CFO can move it.

Master G for optimum performance in the MK23 the 185 gr 45 ACP +P @ 1225 fps put the accuracy of the MK23 in the top tier.

This ammo and the MK23 are a perfect match, over the bag i have easily grouped under one inch at 12 yards.

This ammo Atomic is the fodder i am talking about, was available tru IRG but now they dont sell ammo anymore.

I have located some in New Hampshire.
Good shooting.

Thanks for the ammo tip, Caramel. I hadn’t realized that the pistol was designed to use 185 gr +P until recently. I think I’ve got some Winchester +P downstairs in my specialty ammo stash that I’ll try.

Excellent! Sounds like a great score!

It will shoot great any regular 45 ACP ammo but they explained they needed a pistol that could be used like an assault rifle with power to spare thus the 185 +P that would mimic the power of the 10mm.:ar15::ar15::ar15::shotgun::shotgun::shotgun:

Hey Master-G, looking at your pictures I see that your Mark 23 has the JS in circle just beside the HK laser etching. This marking was only applied on 2003 to early 2006 HK commercial firearms sold through their civilian sporting division. JS stands for « Jagd-und Sportwaffen#» or Hunting and Sporting Arms.

Very nice example you got there. Congrats.

I hadn’t even noticed that! Thanks for the tip!
