Maybe I am cheap, but most guns I find on EE that I am interested in are overpriced. If a gun sells for $749 brand new, they are asking $800. But they have put scope mounts on it of course. To me, that just means an amature worked on the gun instead of a proper gunsmith. So $25 worth of scope mounts don't justify the higher than new pricing. I have seen multiple ads like this. Maybe people don't research the retail price before buying on EE. (I have also found fair deals, just MHO.)

To try and be fair, and expand ion your post, some people got gouged by a local dealer for $900, then Cabelas has a sale on it a year later for $599 when they list it in the EE. I;ve had that happen to me. Then I just kept the gun. Not worth selling. It happens. Other times, people are just greedy.
No panic here. I've bought 2 new Sigs and a Kimber 1911 in the last month.

I recall the same thing happening when the government of the day was going to ban small "Saturday Night Special" firearms; what we now refer to as the 12(6) guns.
A lot of the people that had these guns dumped them, figuring that it would be better to sell them now rather than lose them later.
When the government grandfathered them, most of these people never qualified for the 12(6) status as they had gotten rid of them.
I knew a couple of people that happened to; and they deeply regretted it afterwards.

What about auctions? Just from following a few auctions on line I've seen some decent buys. But there's more risk. As I found out when I bought an old 22LR target pistol in the last (Oct 2018) Switzer auction, rated by them 8/10. But it doesn't function -- jams after one round, with any brand of ammo -- and needs about $150 in work, according to the gunsmith I've left it work. He has to make a new extractor for it. The "extractor" it came with is an obviously home made botched attempt at making a replacement one. Whoever consigned it to the auction must have known it doesn't function. And yes, I know, the auction house's fine print says they don't guarantee anything. The auctioneer has since given me a $75 refund. I like to think that with the rating system on CGN EE, there's less risk of buying a non-functioning firearm. I'll be reluctant to buy another pistol at auction unless I have a reason (rarity, perhaps) to be willing to take the risk of getting a dud gun. (Another time I bought an old 22LR target rifle from an auction in Edmonton, and it was perfect.)
