I remember seeing these for sale in the late 80s and early 90s.

But what I want to know is this: When did the Chinese start making M-14s?

Are the Chinese still building M-14s? Or was my 2011 dated Norinco assembled from old parts?

Does anyone know the full story behind the Norinco M-14?

From Wiki under M14:

M14 production tooling was sold in 1967 to the Republic of China (Taiwan), who in 1968 began producing their Type 57 Rifle. The State Arsenal of the Republic of China produced over 1 million of these rifles from 1969 to the present under model numbers of M305 and M14S.

In China, Norinco and Poly Technologies have produced M14 variants in the past for export, which were sold in the United States prior to the enactment of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994.[20] They are currently being sold in Canada and New Zealand only.[21] They have been marketed under the M14S[22] and M305[23] names.

If I'm not mistaken they got H & R's production line equipment after the U.S. adoption of the M-16 rifle and M-14 Production stopped.

think that applies to the ones MADE IN NATIONALIST china, formosa, taiwan, etc- the ones that come from mainland ( communist) china are reverse engineered american captures, the earliest of which were supposed to be sent to the phillipines to support guerillas ( communist ) there- the uprising was put down and the boat never left china; then the communists were selling them with special modifications to the americans( hence your welded flash hiders, removal of bayonet lugs and full auto bits, and ground funny scope mount ) until bush sr or clinton banned them altogether

PRC M14 copies are indeed reversed engineered, much like the rest of their line of knock off firearms. (1911s, 870s, P226s, AR15s and so on)
The M14 clone production was meant entirely for the export market. (USA commercial market and arming Maoist rebel groups)

Taiwanese/ROC licenced built M14s have no direct connection to the PRC copies, but some have said tooling may have been leaked to the Communists when the T57 production was phased out.

That leaves me more confused than ever. My rifle has no importer's markings and the serial number starts with the year 2011.
