The Hornet Stings

f:P:2: Less wikipedia - more stories about the 22 Hornet down under! Do you folks still have issues with rabbits there?

Would love to have a .22 Hornet but not so common out here in western Canada. When I do find one they go fast and command a premium price.

Glad to see some hunting stories from "Down Under", I traveled there in 1998/99 so always have a spot in my heart for Aussies.

This thread is very interesting to myself as I've just recently purchased a 22 Hornet.
It's heartening to hear that even in the wide expanses of the Austrailian outback, one of our smallest centrefires is still a viable choice for varminting.
Presently 36 grain Varmint Grenades and 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips in handloads, are awaiting launch day.

I've got a similar BRNO hornet and it doesn't shoot the 36gr varmint grenades well at all, not nearly fast enough twist. I shot maybe 25 of them and pulled the rest as i didn't want to waste anymore. I think barnes makes a hornet grenade 30gr that are suppose to work but never tried them. The 36gr grenades work well with a 1:9 twist (I used the remainder in a 223). 40gr Noslers should work nicely though. 45gr Speer spitzer SP are and Hornady 35gr V-max work very good in the hornet also.

I just learned something ...

Possibly.

The category "tribe" is not accepted by all. Vulpini is considered (by some) a tribe of Canidae, however, most biologists/taxonomists do not refer to tribes in describing species.

The Red Fox (species vulpes) belongs to the Genus Vulpes, in the Family Canidae, Order Carnivora, Class Mammalia (or Mammal). However, in scientific usage it is just known as Vulpes vulpes. And then there are subspecies....

Feel free to forget this too.

Foxes have more of a chance breeding with a cat than a dog!

Although in the Canidae family, the Red Fox Vulpes Vulpes is so far removed from Dogs Canis Lupus and their subspecies; Canis Lupus Familiaris and Canis Lupus Dingo, it is impossible for the Fox to interbreed with any breed of Dog, including the Dingo.

Hence my initial outlandish and obvious incorrect statement above. :)

I should really crack open those biology books again, I'm obviously getting rusty with the stuff ...:D

Junkdude, I had to work overtime Sunday. But two buddies took my Hornet along to carry out some shooting for groups at our range. I'm having some 'issues' with the Nosler 40 grain bullets, but it's my first start so....

Referance the 36 grain Varmint Grenades, they did not even register on the target at all! I think I'm done with the V.G. experiment.

Edit: I noticed Cummins4x4 had problems with them as well.

Now it's back to the Sierras or Noslers.

In my 1949 dated 465, 35 grain Vmax's and 296 shoot great. The late 40's and early 50's 465's really have nice wood on them, at least the ones I have seen.

I would convert mine to a K -Hornet, but it shoots so well I am scared to pull the barrel.

I just purchased a Browning A-bolt medallion in .22 hornet. Took it to the range yesterday for the first time. I was amazed at the accuracy! It easily shot 1" groups at 100yds with Remington factory ammo. Can't wait to try handloads. I have a new favorite gun.

Another 100m group using 45gr Sierra Hornets (.223"). AR2205 and H4227 are the same powder.
