The ideal number of pieces in the safe

From time to time, no matter how I try to reduce my collection for different reasons:

ie to free up space, or funds, or safe queens, or unwanted calibers.....I always end up with about the same number of guns!

I wonder how that works... maybe there is an ideal "minimum" number of firearms.

dont you come under some sortof additional scrutiny once you own more than a certain # of guns? i seem to recall something about this - IIRC the magic # was 20.

IMO everyone needs at least these 3 guns:

-bolt-action .22lr (for complete ammo versatility, can fire everything including .CBs, shorts, subsonic targets, etc)
-12ga
-bolt-action ~.30-06 class rifle (can take any game in NA)
 
For hunting puposes, about 8

IMO, about 8 pretty much covers it.

Couple of shotguns (410 and 12), a couple of bush guns (308 and 30-30), you always need at least 2 or 3 long distance rifles (243, 223 or 22-250), throw in a few play things like a LR22, and there you have.... A gun for every occasion.:D

That magic number is 10.

Back on topic: the right number of guns for your safe is the number it takes so that you have to catch one falling out of it every time you open the door.

You might think that buying a second safe alleviates this problem, but that is only temporary as you soon find that there is one falling out of the door on opening each one!
 
My "minimum" number seems to hover right around 40, but almost half of those are rimfires, since that is the least expensive way to have a lot of fun and to improve discipline. Regards, Eagleye

ive read here on CGN (possibly politics forum?) that if you have over xx amount of guns, you are more likely to be visited and checked for proper storage. this doesnt mean that you necessarily will be. IIRC the number was 20. it was a while ago that i read it.
 
for me, it's always a similar variation of target and hunting shotguns (20 and 12g), a couple of target guns in .223 and .308, and then the rest are hunting rigs of various calibers and configurations, and a handgun or 2.

Even though Gatehouse doesn`t like them, I am doing some experimentation with the TC prohunter system, to see if I like them. I don`t mind a single shot rifle in non-grizz country.

As MBP said, it does not mean you WILL get a visit, it just means you could. I remember reading the original C-68 and it made a provision (IIRC) for the CFO to visit your house and verify your storage was adequate if you had >10 firearms registered. Could be wrong on the number, but pretty sure it was 10.
 
Think the number is somewhere around 25 (with an option for another 25)
.22 - rifle - open sights, bolt, semi, take down, single shot, tube fed... and a Cooey :)
.22 - pistol
.223 - target, black
.308 - target, hunting, black
.375 HH - hunting
.357 - S&W revolver
9mm - pistol - combat, target, gas delayed
9mm - pistol - Browning HP
9mm - carbine
.45 - pistol Colt 911
45/70 - lever
12 GA - pump, SxS, O/U
some form of wildcat better than everyone elses
 
I think around 8 - 12 long guns covers most peoples hunting/ plinking needs. I'm currently at 13 and looking to expand up to 20-25, but thats inluding 10 or so milsurps I'd like to acquire.
