The ideal number of pieces in the safe

1 go-to big game hunting rifle
1 back-up big game hunting rifle
1 custom target/varmint rifle
1 .22lr
1 12ga. shotgun

This is all you really need.

better to spend your money on Quality rather then quantity.... And most importantly, don't cheap out on ammo, optics and range time.

Ideal number in the safe...

As many as possible that will fit without giving safe kisses to each other.

I have a room that has 3 walls below ground (concrete foundation) the floor is concrete but 1 wall and the ceiling are frame construction.

I only want to meet the CFA requirements, does not have anything to do with fire or theft. Steel plate is for stopping chainsaws I presume.

I'm only allowed to have 5 guns at a time (wife's rule), I've found the best allocation is: (brackets are what I currently have filling these niches, may change regularly)

1-main hunting rifle (Marlin XS-7 in 7mm-08)
1-Backup hunting rifle (M96 Mauser in 6.5x55)
1-Shotgun (Winchester ranger 140, on it's way from NB)
2-.22lr (savage Mark II and Mossberg 702)

See how many guns your safe holds, and then cram in six more. If you can close the door, multiply the total by two to get your ideal number of guns. If you can't close the door, multiply by 1.5.

The ideal number is always as many as you can possibly afford plus the next 8 or 10 on the need-to-buy-next list plus all the good deals that show up in the meantime.

Its definately a moving target.

12 gauge pump
12 gauge O/U or SXS
20 gauge
22 semi
22 bolt
ar15
306/30-06
338

9mm
.45

and a couple extras. Maybe a 223 varmit, .375HH ect

My vote goes for 12. I have a ways to go:(

I do handload. I probably spend the same amount on reloading components then most do on new guns every year. Having a pile of rifles sitting is the safe is a waste. I, like many others here use to have a larger collection (15+) rifles, I downsized and opted for quality guns that would see more use.

YMMV

If my wife only let me have five, I would have five of the VERY nicest guns out there.

I'm fortunate as my wife gave up counting the boxes coming to and from the post office. I usually have about 12 down there and it's self imposed. All nice guns with good glass. I'd rather have a few good ones than a whole locker full of junker bubba guns topped with Tascos.

Well, slowing them down anyway. - dan

The question is not how many guns is right for you, it is how many full safes is right for you, and how many can you fit in your home?

I am at 16, with # 17 in the mail. This has filled one safe to its comftorable capacity without bumping. Thinking ahead, I have two spare safes ready to go beside the first one.

Two of them are 24 gun safes and one is a monster 54 gun safe, with the extra height option that adds about a foot to the top.

Thats the question. How many safes can you squeeze into your gun room?

Most I've had at one time was 19. Cut it back down to 14..I keep it around there..Once I buy several new ones, I'll get rid of some that are surplus and were a once upon a time impulse buy or the few I don't really use..

I always have my 4 or 5 main rifles/shotguns that don't leave, the rest are because I can...:D

LOL yeah if my wife gave me that number, it would definitely bite her in the ass. I actually only have six guns, but that's just because I have always found a way to spend my money on other things :p. I have an old Cooey .22, an old .410 Stevens, Remington 870 express 12 ga, a Cooey .410, a Remington 7600(carbine) 30-06, and a TC Venture 30-06.
