The INSANE price of sabot slugs

If you are reloading ... and you are looking for something accurate for a rifled barrel ... well then you may want to try the SlugsRUs Hammerhead slugs ..... basically they are the discontinued and famous "Hastings Laser Accurate Sabot Slugs" ... and they are pretty impressive .... !!!

And much cheaper than most factory sabot slugs ... if you cast your own ....

And they ship the wad/sabot and mould to Canada ..... :)

google "Lyman 525"

I use the 525 Lyman in my smooth bore 12 ga and they work well, but they're not designed for rifled guns. These are used with a 1 oz Winchester AA shot cup when loading 'em.

Factory sabot loads ain't cheap and are loaded a tad hot for my liking as well as being light & small diameter for the bore. When I see 18+ bucks fer 5 rounds of sabot ammo well fook, I'm glad I'm a reloader.

For my rifled bores I love the Slugs-R-Us projectiles for general hunting and plinking. For big-ass critters and extra fun on wood busting missions I got an 825 gr, full bore Old West Mold that produces a nice bomb.;)

Federal blue box has a reasonable priced sabot slug $10-$12 a box. Got a new rifled slug gun a couple months ago and it was one of the slugs I tried. At least its only $2 a shot compared to 4 or 5. No different than some of the turkey loads out there. One shop I was in was selling federal 3rd degree turkey shells for $35 a box but not for the usual 10, only came in boxes of 5. He has a mountain of them there and told me he thought they would go like hotcakes. But at $7 a shot for a turkey, he priced them right out of the running for me.

Somewhere over the last few years, many people forgot how easy it is to kill a turkey. Too many idiots want to try and kill them at 60 yards.

You can shoot a .50 BMG for the same price.I'll be getting a sample pack of the Hammerhead slug Slugs R Us sells to try and a Lyman Sabot mold for my son's Savage Slug gun.

My turkey loads are a full oz of #6 copper plated shot in a 2.5" shell. Didnt get a bird this year but shot 3 coyotes with this load. Love old hammer guns. Next spring ill load that load with black powder. I have used 7/8oz #6 for years on turkeys and never lost one using factory chokes in various sxs guns.
Simple loads are often over looked. A 1oz lead slug will flatten a deer just fine on a broadside shot whether its a fancy fast 45 cal or a 72 cal chunk. Deer arent hard to kill if you can hit the vitals

I have reloaded many different kinds of slugs, the Lee key slugs, the Lyman 525gr slug, and the Hammerhead slugs? For my money, in terms of accuracy, the Lyman are the most accurate in my rifled barrel shotgun. The Lyman, with the right Hull, Wad, Powder, Filler, crimp, etc is super accurate for me but I have only shot them to 100 metre's. I have shot 15 in a row into a small pie plate which for an inexpensive semi auto shotgun (Mossberg 930) to be minute of pie plate at 100 is pretty good to me.

I read a lot of reviews about how accurately people were shooting the 525's out of their rifled shot guns. I have no first hand experience though.

That's good to know. I'll have to play with the 525's in my Savage 212 & Rem 870 w/Hastings barrel.

Yea the Sabot slugs are pricey and one has to find the brand that the gun likes... So the occasional sale prices don't mean too much if the rifled slug gun doesn't shoot the ones that are on sale. It would be good if they were offered sabot slugs in a box of 10 or 20, but we would see a hefty price on boxes that have larger quantities.
