The insurance co, says we need a new chimney on the camp!

Yes, I have seen a few installations where people have used a SS A-Vent meant for oil or gas burners to vent a wood stove. As mentioned by Ranger Rick these chimneys are designed to withstand 500 - 700 degrees not the 2000+ degrees normal during a major chimney fire.

John, An outside mounted chimney while less than desirable for performance reasons is not a reason for rejection on it's own. On a retrofit installation it can be damn near impossible to go up through the building so an exterior chimney is the only option. The biggest reason for rejection with these is the through-wall connection. If you have used the proper insulated "T" and brackets as well as maintained the minimum clearances there should be no problem.

Age - especially only 3 years - is NOT a cause for rejection. I have seen 2100 degree chimneys that are nearing 20 years of age that are still in perfect condition and are still in serviceable condition.

Bob, where is the camp? I've got a good chimney guy just south of Kinmount that is an inspector... He might be able to do something for you.
He was able to help us out at the cottage on a few counts.

Bear23 - I had a similar problem when I moved to Central Ontario. My house had a woodstove as a principal source of heat, installled by the local Pacific dealer in the late 90's - all up to spec as far as I could tell.
Called up one of the local insurance agents, and started to get the gears, big time. Insured with them for a year, and continued to get hassles. To boot the insurance agent (a woman) reminded me of the nurse in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
At renewal, I called my auto insurance agent in TO, and inquired about homeowners insurance - no hassles, no inspections, and a 15% price reduction on my auto premium!

The other side of Bancroft, just outside of Vennachar.
I'm waiting for an explanation as to exactly WTF is wrong with our chimney from this guy, and then I guess we'll just have to bite the bullet and go fix it.
Thankfully, there's a Home building center just up the road in Plevna.

There ya go. Fix it, then the problem's over with. Why whine over another 50 bucks in materials for an enjoyable huntin' season ...

The chimney was up when we bought the place, at that point, it had never had a fire in it, still shiny inside.
We dropped the plug out last year, and there was no need to sweep it, no build up at all.
My cottage on the other hand requires a good sweep every season.

Geez, Plevna, John, you know the Kellar boys from there? I used to work with Terry Kellar when I was with CIBC in Manotick, in the early 80's. His family was from Plevna and were big time deer hunters going back several generations. I sold Terry my Ruger Deerstalker in .44 Mag, old school one, gosh I miss that gun!!

Cheers!!
Rick

If the thing needs to be replaced, we're probably looking at 1000 to 1500 dollars just for parts.
(Quick check of prices at Home Depot website)
The high side of a thousand bucks generally makes me a whiner. Particularly when spending it isn't my idea.
Thankfully, we're quite capabable of installing it ourselves.

Cost me about $1200 to go straight up with and thru 1 floor in the shop last year..... PS I have a couple pieces left over you can have real cheap... 6" SUPERVENT if you need them...
have a T-kit and 2 angles... was originally going to go one way got to a point and realized I couldn't do it that way.. since they were installed couldn't return them but they've never been used...

JYC:

Has this all happened since that hunt camp fire near Haliburton that killed those people? If so its probably the typical insurance company knee jerk reaction after every time they have to pay out a claim.

I don't have a solution for you, other than to suggest you contact the provincial agency overseeing the insurance industry and see what avenues are available to you.

OK, I finally got a hold of the guy.
He says our chimney is not up to spec. It may be brand new, but it's not wood stove rated.
So, looks like an early visit to camp for me.
We'll be replacing the chimney, complete, top to bottom to WETT specs.

The old one would probably have rusted out before anything would have happened, but, we just have to keep these guys happy don't we.

Done the deed.
Cost was under $900 including tax. Thanks to setting up a camp account at the local Home Building Center. Got us a nice %10 discount.
Only took a few hours to install. No big deal.
Lots of deer visiting our apple tree too.
