There is a lack of real 'all purpose' shotguns on the market.

I am looking for the longest time to find a full sized (ADULT sized)
20 GA shotgun with a short, smooth, barrel and rifle sights.
I guess all the 12 GA's on the marked are made to extend a certain appendix
that is far to short for most.
take it as you may!

If you don't like the recoil of a 12 GA buy a semi auto.

Plus I wouldn't want a 20 GA for large waterfowl, bears and deer.

Which limits you application to what? Upland game and clays?

maybe 20 GA is not so multi-purpose after all. :shotgun:

If the proper load is used, a 20 guage will knock the bejeeprs outta ducks and geese.
There is no problem loading them to safe levels to do this, either....

An "all purpose shotgun" would typically NOT have a short barrel or rifle sights. More like 26-28" barrel and front bead. You should have no problem finding that with an adult sized stock. If you look into turkey hunting guns though, you may be able to find something that fits your description.

Learn to shoot and hit the gym. 20 ga is for the ladies, 12 ga is where all the selection in firearms and ammunition is.

Here's an example of a totally WRONG answer for someone who asked a straight forward question.
Hopefully the original poster can see the humour in it......
"Total all purpose" means a 12 gauge remington 870 with remchokes or even better, an adjustable Polychoke.
Not the ultimate in everything, but it will get the job done on everything.
I say 12 gauge only because of the availability of ammo.

I have no lack of an appropriate sized "male appendage"
and certainly no lack of a "real" all purpose shotgun either :D

Seeing that you want rifled sites. Are you going to be using this gun for Deer and or Turkey? Because this is probably to small an "appendix" for either. :)

Waterfowl hunting with rifle sights is probably up there with a burst appendix in fun factor!

I think the most all-purpose you could probably get is a pump or semi 12 ga with a 28" vent rib barrel and screw in chokes. You don't need rifle sights and short barrels for turkey, though some prefer them. You could add a 2nd barrel for slugs - rifled or smoothbore with rifle sights or cantilever scope mount. (but people shot a lot of deer without those barrels too!)

28" vent rib is perfectly serviceable for clay shooting too.

Go smoothbore on the 2nd barrel for maximum flexibility with home defense if that's a factor.

You know, shotguns are like crack cocaine. You just keep coming back to the dealer for more!!!

If you pause to think about that it'd be kinda difficult to bring into scope a single shotgun that could be looked at as "one size fits all" firearm in terms of the multiple use scenarios i.e. Wingshooting, Big Game hunting, Range use etc.

Since there is no mention of a specific preference (read action type and/or a price range), the models that come to mind immediately are the Rem 870 Express and Mossberg combos - those are available in 20ga with a 26/28in vent rib smoothbore (screw in chokes) + either a choice of 20inch smooth bore (believe IC fixed choke) with rifle sights or a fully rifled 20inch barrel with rifle sights (believe 22 inch for the Mossy) . Not sure though if Mossberg offers any smoothbore with rifle sights.

Having said that, you could of course shoot deer (inside a limited range) and birds, clay etc with that 26/28 inch bbl with a single bead but you would most certainly have an edge out to 100yds when you have that deer lined up over rifle sights with a rifled tube loaded with sabot.
