Very kewl 5thBatt, thanks. My 1918 SMLE wears a 1917 H. G. & R. Ltd. web sling (brass ends w/copper and steel composite rivets). I had no idea of the pattern '14, but it makes perfect sense. Cotton coming from the America's or elsewhere in the Commonwealth would have to be imported to Britain and with the U-Boats (lesser threat) and the German Empirical Navy (greater threat) cutting waves in the Atlantic, it would make sense for them to resource native solutions as they amped up for a war all but the blind saw coming for at least 2 years prior to 1914.
Incidentally, the sling on my rifle is still in remarkably serviceable condition, whether it saw trench duty or remained on the shoulder of a troopie @ home, no one will ever know, but this webbing surely stands the test of time. To that there can be little argument.
