The legal G36s

There were a very limited number of G36C and G36Ks (in semi-auto) that were shipped to Canada for LE only, but were sold to civis against HK's "regulations".

You can occassional find them posted on the board in the Military/Black rifles and occassionally in places like P&D for upwards of $7-8,000.

I believe they are non-restricted

The carbine is restricted due to barrel length I beleive. There was one on Valleyguns auction site for $6500.......

Would there be much difference between buying an actual G36C/K compared to buying a SL8 with a G36-like stock?

Different mag configuration, and the real thing says G36 on it. Probably other differences as well.

Weight, flash suppressor, other details , length of pull. The aftermarket G36 stock adaptors add about an inch to the lop (solution is acquiring a G36C stock, which is about that much shorter than the G36K/G36 stock).

I turned my SL8 into a 'G36' and in the end had a really heavy 'carbine' due to the 'target' contour barrel. Now it sports a nightforce scope and I use it for precision work. You can, of course, find someone to turn the barrel to a G36 profile.

People stick various optics on top. For the 'authentic' look, you'll buy a Hensoldt dual-optic for about $700US.

The stock adaptor with pistol grip is a great addition, and you end up with an accurate 223 semi that requires almost no cleaning in the receiver area. Here's a site that will give you an idea of what is involved in a full conversion to the US model - the difference in Canada is that you don't have to mill the receiver, it's already wide enough for G36 mags (you just grind down two non-structural nubbins inside the mag well). http://alpinetek.netfirms.com/guns/SL8/

By the time you're done all the work and added all the pieces, you will be somewhat close to just buying one of the G36K's floating around.

Having said that, it makes a great project if that's your kind of thing.

hey acrashb:
what kind of ammo do you use in your sl8. I'm looking for some stuff to reload so that I can shoot precision with. Any suggestions?

For plinking, any surplus will do. For accuracy, Lapua brass, fed match primers, VVN140 pushing lapua 69gr Scenars. The exact load is up to you. Lots of prep on the brass to uniform it, and all the other usual things to optimize the rifle/ammo combo. Any good brass (lapua, norma), good bullet (lapua, sierra, custom) and so on will do the job. Lots of powders will work, VV burns cleanly as does RL15, so I use them (compressed loads in my gun). Good dies (Redding, Forster, newer Hornady) to keep things trued up. You can get the lapua from Hirsch Precision, Norma from dizzy dan on the board, other stuff from various suppliers (except good luck finding any VV powders in Canada).

Hmmm.... sounds just like a Swissarms Classic Green, or for that matter a Robarm M96 Expeditionary. Come to think of it, the Armalite AR-180B would also fit the bill. Gas-driven piston operation is not a new concept....

For the money required to "pimp"an SL-8 to resemble a G-36 "wannabe"? I'd rather spend the coin (or half) on any of the above proven systems. Nothing cobbled together, and good to go from the outset. But hey, that's just me.

By all means, fill your boots and empty your wallets building a look-a-like that will still be a butchered civilian rifle. Each to their own.....

Having fun is what it is all about. Your "fun" and mine may differ, but such is the nature of the beast.

on a side note, off topic, I fired full auto G36k and C versions (with Gemtech silencers) this past weekend at a class3 dealr in maine. :p I also tried out the MP5K on full auto, and an UZI, and also a silenced USP tactical in .45.

there were a bunch brought in by a movie gun supplier that were also sold to civilians.

That sounds like alot of fun. How was the barrel rise/kick on the G36 in full auto?

the shorter G36 was a little bumpy..... but the longer version was very controllable in Full auto, with and without the silencer. So controllable that I put almost every round into a target board at around 45 yards in one squeeze

the mp5k was very controllable as well, not one FTF in all the shooting we did, except one FTE on the shorter G36 with the silencer on.

But, it is fully possible to swap the barrel for a 20 incher, making it non-restricted, right? Again, I'm assuming it would arrive at your place via temp ATT, swap barrel, call in CFC, tell them them you complied with their (*cough*useless*cough  ) rules, and you'd be set to go pest hunting, right?

Sure. Try finding a 20" barrel in Canada - I don't think HK will sell you one. You can find them from time to time on US bulletin boards at fairly stiff prices. Then you go through the money and hoops to import. And find a gunsmith with the special barrel-nut wrench, and so on.
