what would be the lightest rifle compact rifle that can kill a deer at 300yds that would be under $1000, a H&R single shot in 243 comes to mind
 
.243 bullet too light to kill a deer at 300 yards.

My dad used 6mm for deer for years. I don't think it should be used to hunt deer at all. imo.
 
Whats the weight on a H&R single shot? My Henry Single Shot weighs more than many bolt actions, particularly those in tupperware stocks - my Savage Axis, for example, is listed at 6.3lb whereas my Henry single shot is listed at 7.1lb.

Is $1000 the "budget" (I expect this is hypothetical, not something you're actually looking to buy/build?) including scope, or just a rifle?
 
One of the "lightest" that I have here is a Ruger Compact in 243 Win - apparently some debate is possible, whether that is a 300 yard deer gun or not - 16.5" barrel, with Leupold 2-7x33 scope and Ruger rings - standard Ruger wood stock - no cartridges or sling - is 6 pounds 11 ounces. This rifle plus scope is likely way past your $1,000 limit, these days, though ...
 
Go on intersurplus and check out their rifles. They list the weight of all of them and there is probably 150 rifles under 1000$ you will find the lightest in the low 6 pounds high 5's but only cost a few hundred

Any choice should be minimum .35, with .45 being the best (obviously).

Gives you a more predictable trajectory from far, with that reliable takedown punch for bear defence up close, should the need arise.

Just imho, but there ought be a law.

If this is /s then it went over my head. Sorry.

I'd go with a 7mm Weatherby Magnum or Remington Magnum over any 45 caliber for 350 yard deer. Guess we could check out bullet drop, velocity, and energy at that distance. I don't think a 45-70 would be a good choice, rainbow trajectory and all.

Many companies make them. They are just a one piece mount. This one is cantilevered but some are not. That one is a SWFA but I have others made by other companies. You can get cheap ones or up to very expensive ones They work great and make it easy to remove/replace the scope if desired.

Well I don't want to sound like one of those .45 elitists out there (you know the type, eh) but I think the calibre that basically won WW1, should be the standard by which all deer hunting should be measured (especially when out to 300 yards, and doubly especially when we're talking sub $1000 here).
