after building a 6 pound scoped bolt action in 6.5x55 i figured i also need a light weight rimfire to go with it, well not so much used at the same time as have both of them in my safe for when wanted.

i kicked around the idea of an old cooey 39 lightened up, or buying something like a ar7, then i seen this little mossberg 702 youth in the back of my safe that i had put a 10" barrel on while ago.

it weighed 4 pounds from factory, a little less with the shorter barrel but it was bigger diameter so pretty close

i took it apart last night to see where i could save weight. made a game plan in my head then took it all to work this morning

what i ended up doing was,

-changed pins for roll pins
-shortened the mag to 7 rounds to make it more stream line with the rifle (lighter too)
-made four 3mm wide 1mm deep cuts into the bolt
-removed what i could from the bolt handle
-turned the barrel super thin, just in front of the receiver its 12.5mm and tapers to 11.5mm over 9" (1" tenon)
-skeletonized the trigger guard/assembly
-removed a 8mm wide 4mm deep slot from top of receiver
-machined 1/2" holes in receiver below the stock line

i would have put more holes in the receiver but i didnt want to let any dirt in anywhere that wasn't already open.

it is 27" long with a short lop of 12.25" but its not so bad with the shape of the stock and lack of recoil

the stock weights 1 pound 1oz, so i still plan to remove what i can from the stock and then find out where else to remove weight to make the rifle weigh 1pound 15oz

so im shooting for under 2 pounds all said and done, i also need iron sights on it, ill make something for a rear slight that sits in the slot in the top of the receiver so gain some sight radius

the main plan is to be able to strap this to a backpack and not even know its there

what do you guys have for light weight backpacking rifles?

It came to me as a 1" stright tube 21" long. A friend brough up a few from the states so i told him to get me one too. I believe its a green mountain blank. Not sure though. Cost me 75$

And i need the forearm to save the little barrel from getting bent. Also i like the look of a longer forearm.

Nice work there Evanguy!
The rifle above was the lightest I have ever owned. I sold it a few years back but I still keep the images as proof of how light a modified 10/22 could be.
3lbs 6ozs with red-dot optic and magazine. It shot great too.

The barrel was a 9" Whistlepig Acculite and the Blackhawk Axiom stock was crazy light as well.
I can only imagine how light it would have been with the O.P.'s mods!

thanks guys and yeah i bet my kids will like shooting it lots
sun_and_steel_77, that's not a bad weight at all really, im just going to the extreme for the sake of doing it really. i read about 15oz single shot backpacking rifles, so i though if i could make a 1 pound 15oz semi for free out of what i have already that would be pretty cool,

i made a new game plan and took parts to work, to shave those last 7.2oz

i made some cutout in the stock, also ran a large ball nose endmill down the side of the stock on both sides.
removed a bit more from the receiver below the stock line
fluted the barrel
installed a front sight (weighs 0.1oz)
bead blasted it so i can paint the while thing

i fell shy of my goal, im not sure where ill get the rest of the weight off, the only spot i can think of is lengthen the bottom 4 flutes to closer to the muzzle and extend all 6 closer to the chamber
they are a 6mm ball nose plunged 1mm deep muzzle end and they go to 1.4mm deep at chamber end due to barrel taper

i also want to change the angle of the cutout in the butt stock near the grip to make the lines flow better

i hope to get that done tomorrow, im so close to the under 2 pounds i was going for, i cant stop now, i want to see 1.15.9 on the scale, and i still need to add a rear sight

Very cool. Throw some small holes in the trigger and mag release maybe? Get another 1/2 ounce. I suppose the first ounces are easy, the last portions of an ounce are much more work.

Could you drill out the center of the safety button, hollow it out and plug/cap the ends with aluminum? Might be half an ounce or so there.

I'm starting to think I want something like this to shoot with CCI quiet bullets, to pop grouse with when hunting big game.

Ill have more updates this and thanks cody-c for some ideas of where to remove some weight. I didnt plan on taking the trigger assembly apart but i may still. Ill bring it to work monday and see what i come up with. Ill try for a full mag (7 +1) and still under 1.15.9. The rimfire ammo i was weighing are .1oz each so 8 of them are .8oz

Also Hoytcanon, i was about to say " well leaving the ammo at home would make the gun useless, are you suggesting this 2 pound rifle is useless?" But then i saw pics of you in the mountain hunting thread, and realized for you, it would be useless, myself though, im quite a bit smaller

yeah i looked at little badgers when i was thinking of getting a "backpacking" rimfire, I'm pretty sure they break 3 pounds

there is this odd rifle. its cool in design but i don think id want to shoot a hundred or so rounds in an after noon whilst out hiking around. has a fishing rod and all built in. but at 500usd, id sooner be buying a center fire from tradeex

well its under 2 pounds, i didnt remove any metal from the mag as i didnt want to let any dirt in. but i extended the 4 bottom flutes on the barrel to the muzzle, drilled through the safety and counter bored from both ends., machined the mag release to be lighter, also machined the top of the receiver flat.

i need to remove about .4oz still if i want it under 2 pounds whilst loaded with a full mag, also need to make some type of rear sight. i cant really see anywhere to get any more weight from the receiver or barrel, i guess it will come from the stock.

i have no idea why the pics are sooo god damn big, i changed my setting on my phone to smallest size.

Well done. What's left to lighten? Only thing I can think of is run a hole sideways through the front site behind the rear screw. Could maybe find some titanium screws off aliexpress to replace the action screws, you may have to drill/tap to slightly oversized metric or whatever is available.

Nah, just an attempt at "tongue in cheek" humour...
