The Long Branch Factory - As it stands today...

I bike next to this site on regular bases.Lots of people come looking at backstops and talking about what was there.

It seems to me Long Branch Arsenal is relatively well known ,extend of it isn't. Years before arsenal there use to be an airfield almost next to its site. There is still a plague about it next to Marin Goodman bike trail.

What I'd like to know is if there are any plans for future use of this part of waterfront. This chunk of land from Marie Curtis park to Lakeshore Promenade Park has been empty for decades.

There is some construction going on and off, security is rather tight but nothing official is known
.

Maybe some members here at CGN can get together a work party to clear the brush for that old range and bring it back into operation. Great post OP and thanks for allowing us to be witness to this much storied piece of Canadian history.

My, my! Talk about memories.
I lived at 15-42nd Street in Long Branch, 1950-1956. In the black and white photo I can almost pick out my house. Gunfire was a sometimes constant "white noise" at times, no big deal.

The Ford dealership is purported to be the girl's dormitory site. If that photo is at the foot of Dixie Road, then the "dormitory" was known locally as the Staff House at one time. There was a small convenience store inside on the ground floor.

The building nearest Lakeshore Blvd once served as a Canada Post outlet, I assume that that is the same building being now used for community events. At one time, that building was dedicated as a military armoury housing A Coy of the Lorne Scots and 2 Sig Sqn of the 2nd Signal Regiment. I was an army cadet participating in a drill team presentation for the opening ceremonies.

I have a brick from one of the demolished buildings and an 8L series FN C1A1 to remind me of its past history.

i’ve driven by so many times, sad of what it has become despite the sites contribution to Canada’s war effort, it’s like we should be ashamed? hopefully this summer i’ll get to go through this area, since i’m only working few minutes away

OP, thank you for sharing

There is a long thread in the GunNutz archives on Long Branch.

I guess it's dead n buried by now.

Pictures from early 90's when Canada Post Corp. occupied the buildings before the big tear down.

I parked at the Long Branch GO station over the winter when I went to the Auto Show with my daughter to avoid dealing with end of day downtown traffic. I gave her a brief history of what used to be there, but this thread is gold, thank you so much for sharing.

I'd bet if you took something to check the radioactivity in that area you wouldn't find any . it also stated Radon gas ? BS. hope you checked yourself for ticks after you wondered in that area. great Post .

Cigar_man and i were able to walk around inside the old arsenal the actual factory back in the day just a big empty building by then i did find a rusty trigger housing for a C1 stirling but even before we did that i used to work in Clarkson at a lumber yard and i delevered lumber to the remaining building many times the reciever used to work at CAL back in the day and had many stories ..i asked him why when i went and explored the old range i found a crap load of shotgun brass he told me when H +R were up here working on the FN development and business was slow with not gun contracts H+R had CAL make cheap single shot shotguns and .22 cal rifles ....i have one of each i also found all kinds of crap in the little creek that ran right beside the fence by the factory its like they shovelled stuff over the fence ..they probably did...and i dont mean the creek that is close to where the coal plant was there is was a small creek right close to the factory ..i have that stuff somewhere around here.ido have 3 cool pins for service at CAL,and REL .REL apparently had some space at the factory for RandD i think they are 5 and 10 year service pins .i still have No4 rifles i bought back 40 plus years ago always loved the quality of any thing made therev my sten and my C1A1 are also extremely well made ...to bad its all just history that not too mamy ppl these days care about..thanks for posting this it brings back fond memories

Just FYI, there _must_ be radioactive material in that mound else the sign would be 'frivolous posting' and illegal and would get them in trouble with CNSC (yes, I forwarded that to the responsible people at CNSC with a question :p)

Update: Radiation hazard is legit, radium presence due to waste from the production of radioluminescent dials. Don't dig in hopes of finding a machine gun :p Seriously.

Toronto actually has several sites with contamination from the production of radioluminescent dials. You can find more info on the CNSC site - they have a section on historical waste sites.

And once again on the subject of frivolous posting - it is illegal to post radioactivity signs frivolously, so any radioactivity signs you run across are very real and to be taken seriously. https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-2000-203/page-2.html

Neat, thanks for sharing.

Where is the super rich investor to bring it back to life and start producing guns again:)
