THE "LTR" thread

I had my LTR out today, shot at 500meters and 1000meters(on a small lake)

I hit my gong three times in a row with 4 minutes of left wind and 48Minutes of drop(gong is 20" by 20")it took me two shots to get on target shot just under then a tad over then I was on

so that little 20" barrel has no problems getting out there

Ltr

3rd time out with the new LTR .308 First time at 500yds. And 1st shot cold, 12x12 plate....hit. Very nice. Could have done that all day. If your thinking on getting one? Go for it. But i do have to thank Jamie for the tech. help and reloading.

they don't call me the pusher for nothing....Great Shooting SS109 you did good on the trigger
oh and it was 500meters yards are for pussies

Ltr

Yards, meters..........it was along way from the sound of the rifle. Thanks. Now the 1000 meters, thats along way! :canadaFlag:

Wow guys, good shooting! Man I'd love to try mine out at 1000m.
Jamie: That's pretty friggen good! What load were you using? Usually if you're shooting under about 165's, especially with a short barrel, it drops subsonic.

175 SMK out of winchester brass,44gr's of IMR 4895,federal 210M primers 2.820 COL

2600FPS (avg)

SS109 is running the same ammo(I load for him) and our come up's were to the click's the same at 500Meters

I am running this load in two LTR's and one Savage 110fp it shoot SUB MOA in every gun I have tried it in

Oh ok cool! When I start reloading I'll definately try that out. That'll definately get you out to 1000 though; those 175's keep a lot of momentum.

-Rohann

I was hoping my LTR would like the 154gr Scenar but when I got the speed up the groups went to ####.....oh well 175 it is

I am also using the 168SMK out to 600 and its is awesome!! same powder charge as my 175gr load and two clicks higher the my 175 load at 100meters

Jamie

Rohann with your rifle I would try Varget or Reloader 15 over IMR 4895( its the best powder I have found for use in short barrels)

I would start with 43gr of Varget or RE15 and work up,get a load the shoots best before you see how fast it is load it to fit your mag.

I wish you were closer I could help you get it all going

How do the 168's vs. 175's compare group wise?

-Rohann

about the same the best groups I have shot now that I have the Nightforce and can see my Target are .30"168SMK and .32"175 SMK at 100meters

I was having no problems hitting clays at 500meters with those loads

but the 175 will and does do better in the wind and at longer ranges 600 and out

Jamie

Holy cow! Yeah the 175's will probably hold up quite a bit better for longer range. I think I'm probably going to try both 168's and 175's, and maybe a few others.

thats the right way to do it!!

try abunch out and see how it does, but the SMK's are easy to find

My HS likes the 154 gr Lapua Scenars but I have to push them fast at long distances. This is harder on the brass and the barrel. The 175's buck the wind better but the 154's have a better BC. 6 of 1, half dozen the other I guess.

The 154's like to sit closer to the lands in my gun, closer than I have to run the 175's. The longer load on the 154's just squeek into my mags and don't feed the best. If you sit the 154 beside the 175 SMK the Lapua is actually longer.

I don't know about what kind of luck others have had but my rifle sucked big with the 168 SMK, and the greater distance the shot, the worse the groups were. Past 400m they were no good. The 154's and 175's solved that problem. The 175's being less fussy to load.

As Jamie pointed out, you can use a slower burning powder with the longer barrel (Varget or RL15, Varget being less tempurature sensative). He will have better luck with IMR as its burn rate is faster, generates the pressure he needs in the shorter barrel before the bullets out the business end.

Good luck, try some different stuff and see what works.

Its actually not, once you find what your rifle likes, (their all a little different), then hand loading is easy, just follow the recipe. If your loading in volume, ( I do either 400 or 800 round batches of Lapua Brass at one time), then it takes more time but then your set up to shoot for a while before your back at it again.

Jamie: And the SMK's are some of the most consistent bullets out there. From what I've seen, 700's like the 175's the best but I'll try em both out. I'm hoping to get a load with about the same specs as the Federal Gold Match.

Blackcloud: Will do! I'll experiment a bit as soon as I get my reloader (which is as soon as Pay Services decides to mail me my cheque...).
The 154 has a higher BC than the 175? What's the BC?

-Rohann

Ballistic Coefficient = (BC) is how streamlined a bullet is, ie: how well it slices through the air. Ballistic Coefficient basically represents the air drag over the bullet. The higher number = less drag. This will also reflect on the bullets trajectory & how its affected by wind drift as long as factors (velocity being one of the most important) is constant.
