Is there many fellows on this forum that own and shoot the 9mm Luger, id' be interested in hearing your input on this famous pistol. I have read that it is fussy as to what ammo it is fed. Also what do you know about your Luger's history, ie: is it a WW2 , WW1 pistol or made between both wars. Thanks.

BYF? (i'm at work) 1941, pitted bore, all numbers matching, fairly shinny.
Shot way high with 124 gr FMJ.
Shoots 1-2" high at 25 yards with 115. I forget my load but you can start off low and when you get a load that cycles reliably, stop threre, it will be fairly "warm" but not "hot". Yes they are fussy but quite strong and accurate, even with the pitted bore.
I will not tell you how hot I have loaded it, but it will not cycle properly with loads too light or too hot.
Lots of fun - people drool on it

The proper name for the Luger is the P08, meaning 'Pistol 1908' I donot know how long they were made for but it was until after WW1 for certain.

Luger stopped production from BYF(mauser) by 1942 when they switched over to the P38. I dont think anybody else produced lugers tell awhile after WW2 and that was for commercial models I would think.

Lugers

X Westie,

Lugers are my main area of collecting.........

Production started in 1900 with the DWM Commercial models in 7.65mm ( 30 Luger ) and the Swiss Military Models ( same in 30 Cal w/ 4 3/4 in bbl. )

German Navy adopted it in 1904 with the 6 in bbl in 9mm Cal. 100-200 meters rear sight ( probably the most sought after pistols by Collectors )

German Army adopted it in 1908 ( here's where the P08 designation comes from ``Pistole 1908`` ) Military production by DWM & the Erfurt Arsenal. Artillery variation ( LP08 with an 8 in bbl & tangent rear sight ) from 1914-18.

Versailles Treaty had Military production resumed in 1920. Commercial & Police models produced by DWM & Simson ( from 1925 ).

III Reich production secretly started in 1933-34 with Mauser taking over the Simson factories ( which were owned by Jewish interests ). Krieghoff steps in production in 1935 ( till 1945, the so-called ``post war models`` )
Mauser ceased production in 1942 like Scarecrow stated. The last P08s produced by Mauser were the Portugese contract in late 42.

How they shoot ?? My ``built shooter`` in 30 Cal does 1 1/2 inch @ 100 yds. Only other handguns I shot getting close to that kind of accuracy are Model 29 Smiths........You can expect ragged holes at 10-15 meters off hand. Yes they are finicky of ammo. You get used to the usual ``Luger Jam`` which is usually caused by a bad mag or underpowered ammo. They work best with 124gr & heavier bullets with a powerfull loading.........Pointability is probably the greatest quality of this beautifull piece of German engineering......

Hope this helps a bit........Feel free to email me anytime for info.......

MARK

My friend picked up a beautiful Kreighoff P08 during one of the amnesties. The local cop had the good sence to send the owner to the gun club to flog it instead of destroying it.

I feel like a Philistine when I tell people I can't freaking stand the damn things. Too fussy for my tastes. They look nice, but.......................
