The M1 Garand Build Thread

With the amount of us who recently bought receivers, completely oblivious to the workings of the M1 Garand, I figured we should be contained to one thread outside of a sponsors forum. This way we can (hopefully) post links (no hotlinking) to places to buy our parts. Ask your questions, give eachother a hand, share the wealth of knowledge, post up your build pics.

As of right now, the best places to get Garand parts are:

Simple answer, does it have a detachable magazine. A BM-59 has a detachable magazine, and the Garand does not. That should be easy to explain to even the dimmest badge in the country.

What other BM-59 parts work with a Garand, I have a receiver, perhaps it's time to do something with it...

I have a garand converted to detachable mags (from m14) - so not so simple :p

being just on the firearm like it is ,wouldn't it get seized until it could be verified? There are a lot of Dudley do rights out there, that need something to do on a slow day. With all this gun hate i don't need to get flagged on the system with any thing potential negative. This is what Orwell wrote about. IView attachment 881805 just want to get my moose next fall. Not worry about an arsenal stamp on my rifle.
I don’t think you have to worry about that. Any LEO that knows what a BM59 is (suspect very few) will know that this is not one of ‘em.

Not really. It would perfectly legal for me to take an M1 Garand receiver and install all BM 59 parts, including modifying the receiver for the magazines. BM 59 receivers are marked as such, even if using modified US Garand receivers. “CAL. 30 M1” has been struck out and stamped 7.62 with Breda or Beretta markings added as well.

I’ve got the op rod and drop down gas cylinder from a BM 59. Just need one of the tri comps for a build. I’d stick with en blocs though.

There is an easier way that to make a BM59. Read up on the Erquiaga:

The Erquiaga Ams EM62 Modification of the M1 Garand is not at all like a BM 59 modification. The EM62 uses:

A new 7.62mm barrel 18 1/4 " long that is heavier than a Garand, M14 or BM59 barrel
The gas port is .087 inches in dia. and 12 inches forward from the rear of the barrel.
A new drop down type gas cylinder is used. It is pinned to the barred by two roll pins.
The top of the gas cylinder is dove tailed for a standard M1 front sight. The cylinder tube is 5 1/4" long and extends into the stock channel.

The op rod is straight and is 13" long overall. The op rod spring guide is patterned after an M14 op rod spring guide including using the end as the front magazine catch. The rear receiver legs are unmodified. The front legs are thinned but not V cut. The front of the receiver is opened to to accept the M14 mag. The bottom front of the receiver is also opened up to accept a magazine guide. This guide is held in by the follower pin. It is also milled to allow the recoil spring guide to pass thru.

A rear spacer block with the magazine catch and bolt hold open is utilized. This block has a rib on each side. The ribs allow the spacer block to slide into the enbloc clip grooves on the rear receiver legs. The ledges on the rear legs acts as stops and the trigger houses keeps it in place.

The only modifications to the trigger housing is being milled out for the magazine and a small clearance cut for the magazine catch.

The stock is modified with the magazine cut out, stock ferrule lip is removed and the ferrule is opened up to allow the gas cylinder tube to pass thru.

The bolt appears to be unmodified.

All in all it appears to be not a complex modification and the magazine is forward unlike the BM59.

I did something very similar, happy to take pictures if you let me know what you want to see. Perhaps with pictures of a garand and I'll take a picture from the same angle?
Comparison with a Garand would be great. My interest would be mostly with a shorter barrel and drop down gas cylinder. Magazine conversions are cool, but not something I’d consider for myself.

ETA: like a BM62 but keep the en bloc clips from the Garand.

Oh, I see, I misunderstood :( I was talking about the mag conversion...

Can show that part but not gas cylinder mods... Sorry!

No worries, I’m more interested in “tanker” style conversions. Make the Garand as short as legally possible, but still reliable. I’ve got the BM59 parts (minus tricolour) for it and I understand that a Garand barrel can be used with a little work.

It’s still a neat conversion. I saw your bumped thread, very cool.
