The M1 Garand Build Thread

I'm possibly looking into building a garand. I was just wondering what would be some good books to buy to help me along the way. I'd probably scavenge all the parts assemble what i can and send the rest out to be assembled.

The .30 Service Rifle Shop Manual by Jerry Kuhnhausen has pretty much everything you need to know about assembling M1 Garands and M14s. I bought my copy from Brownells.

I would start by finding a barrel and a bolt. That way you can send your action to get barrelled.

I'm probably getting a stripped receiver from SFRC. is there any difference between the Breda and the beretta receivers? I'm not looking for a collector piece or anything. I just always loved the M1. where does one get their action barrelled?

is there any difference between the Breda and the beretta receivers? ... where does one get their action barrelled?
No difference, they are both top of the line. Condition is all.
There is a member here with 7.62 Criterion barrels at a good price, posting on the EE. He offers to fit and headspace to your reciever as part of the deal. Do an EE search going back a month or two.

If you were to write off an evening and read all 726 posts of this thread, ... there's everything you could ever need to know about building yourself a <Proper> M1 Garand.
A wealth of knowledge here, from some very savvy folks.

How much does it roughly cost to build your own garand? ( to the custom builders on here) i am interested in possibly going down this path as well.

You're looking at roughly $1600-$1800+ depending on how far you want to take things. It's a great project.

Squinty has really upped the game ;) Those are some NICE looking Garand's!
