The M1 Garand Build Thread

wow!

If anyone is looking for bolts, I would highly recommend redfile3 on fleabay. Ships from Greece, so shipping is a bit longer, and no tracking number is available, but they definitely show up. The bolts are SA bolts. Shipped to my door it was a little over $80, and includes all of the parts required for the bolt assembly. Wrapped in some mystery paper, doused in cosmoline. They are as fresh as they get!

Got my receiver :)

Anyone know a source for ''cheap'' rear sights ...

I think you're going to find that the receiver is the only "cheap" thing on your build ($-wise)! I got a set of the Italian M1 rear sights on my M-14 from Treeline M-14 in the US. They were brand spanking new and set me back about about $85 before shipping. I think $70 is about the cheapest USGI rear sight I've seen in the EE.

Ordered some of my stuff, all of my receivers are in. 3 Breda & 2 Beretta, most of them have varying degrees of use, however one of my Breda's looks like it came straight out of machining without a park coat, it looks like it's never been touched. Stock set, barrel, and bolt on their way. Rest of the parts will be ordered within the next month.

I know don't worry ! Got a NOS barrel coming + NOS bolt.

Thanks for the tip about the sights :)

Not yet. My order shipped on November 6. I'm figuring with customs it might should be here by months end.

I got mine in Friday. Was out, came home today and opened it up. Nicely packaged, and everything in very good condition. Some SLIGHT surface rust on a bit or two, but nothing unexpected on 60 year old parts.

That's it for me though, for the year. Can't budget room for any more parts...

Folks should expect to spend $1200-$1400 for all of the parts necessary to build up a rifle on a receiver. Re-parkerizing, tooling and gunsmithing costs for barrel installation and finish reaming if using a new barrel are additional to this. The best technical reference on the Garand, bar none, is the Kuhnhausen Shop Manual. The Kulek booklet on assembling a Garand is useful as well. There is no need to lap the bolt lugs as Kulek suggests. This was not done in either the manufacture or overhaul process.

Just finished putting the trigger assembly together, this video is a pretty handy reference:

Barney (Hungry/Tactical Teacher) showed me how to build my SEI/LRB M-14 step-by-step this spring so I can't wait to do it all over again with this M1 project, just waiting on my barrel vise!
