Sorry to hog the forum, fellas...but I am looking at the idea of scoping my M1A or maybe going to a shorty with a scout rifle scope. Any of you guys running one of those? What kind of accuracy are you getting? And what is the muzzle blast like from a shorty? I have never fired one but a few who have claim that it can be a rude little gun to shoot. I am contemplating such a gun for fun at the range first, and a SHTF scenario second. Do any of you have any informed thoughts on the matter?
 
I've never noticed any kind of increased muzzle blast when firing one, but I've had nearby people comment on an increase in noise. Nothing like you'd get from a 10" AR or anything like that though, and probably nothing like what you'd get from most muzzle breaks.

The selection of regular eye-relief scopes is so much more vast and deep than that of scout scopes that if I were you I'd just get a good receiver mount and go with that. If you're dead set on a scout scope you'd probably be well served by an M14.ca railed handguard.
 
I have a shorty with a blackrose muzzle brake on it. other peple at the range tell me she's LOUD! the muzzle blast doesnt seem bad tho, but it doesn't bother me. I also have the M14.ca railed hand guard on it with a red dot. no scout scope for me. I like the red dot. I have contemplated getting a rail to mount a scope over the reciever and try and build some good hand loads to see what the gun can actually do but havent got around to it yet. maybe this winter. the M14.ca stuff I have is quality stuff. I wouldnt hesitate to recomend it.
 
I have had two M14 scouts and the muzzle blast has never been obnoxious. I had the factory flash hider on the last one and it was fine. A scout scope would be a great setup on such a rig.

Looking to do the same with my shorty- which red dot did you go with? I don't have a ton of spare cash right now, so thinking the m14.ca railed handguard with the bushnell trs-25....
 
Well I already have one of the scope mounts from M14.CA but I am loathe to use it! I have been putting it off because I love iron sights but my eyes are getting too old to use them. Gawd, I wish I had this rifle 20 years ago!

I am going to take the mount and have my smith put it on and mount a 3x9 Swarovski on it. My problem is that once I get a cheek rest made and the scope set up...that is going to be one ungainly rifle...or is it? Do you guys find that your regular length M14's with scopes are ungainly in the field? When I shoot I like to get off the bench and sling up...hopefully the gun is still handy...
 
Here's my scout config. I'm not a huge scout scope fan, especially when optics such as the VX-6 1-6 that I have on the GSR are now available. I didn't want to drill a cheekpiece riser onto the stock, so scout scope was really the only option. The scope on the M14 is a Burris 2-7 with the ballistic reticle. I worked through a bunch of different bullet/velocity options to find a load that matches the hash marks in the reticle out to 500yds. Seems to be a useful rifle now. Still heavy as hell, but a lot handier now that it is down to a reasonable length. Kinda funny that it worked out to be almost exactly the same length as the GSR.
