A proposal to the Mods - censor any post and censure the poster who desn't follow this rule:
"If you don't have anything nice to say about someone, say nothing at all".
Well we're not about to censor anyone, and lets face it... there's plenty of room for HONEST critisizm of lots of things in our community.
However - there's a thin line between critical discourse, or even the occasional bit of 'venting', and just general bad-mouthing.
It's about attitude.
Snip!
These people are simply dickheads and deserve a thorough public slagging.
I hear what you're saying, clay, and i know you have a point. Lets face it, there's some twinkies out there and that's going to be the case in any group.
But i look at the words often used in this thread, and others. "lots". "most". "can't tell you how many times..." etc.
And garand -
I totally agree that what the guy did was unacceptable, but if i read between the lines of the account - the guy made a simple forgetful error that isn't acceptable, but is easy to make (check gun is unloaded, put it down.. oops, forgot there's other people about).
I don't mean to make light of it at all, the guy deserved a talking to, but perhaps all things considered it was an understandable mistake. Rather than a sign of someone acting with utter disregard and contempt of the rules i mean.
I wish we'd look at this kind of thing and look at positive solutions along with the problems. Maybe your range needs to have a quick saftey orientation for 'open days' when hunters sight in - they need to attend a 5 minute saftey refresher before using the range. Probably do a LOT of people good to get a little reminder. I'm sure lots of volunteers could be scrounged up
lets face it - there IS a problem with newbies thinking they need the biggest, baddest noisemaker on the block and going out there without the skill to make use of a monster cannon while they shoot at deer or other medium game.
I guess i've too often seen these threads turn us against one another, where magnum shooters feel slighted, range shooters feel insulted, 'shoot-for-hunting' shooters feel targeted, etc.
Yeah - some guys don't give a flying fig about guns, they just need 'em to hunt. And they're not going to be as aware as a guy who lives and breathes guns. I just don't know how constructive it is to portray that constantly as almost being the 'norm', and with no solutions or discussions in sight about how to deal with it.
