Garand, You are totally correct, Elwin was probably one of the, if not THE, nicest guy I ever met, and was taken from us FAR too soon by an EXTREMELY rare disease. In fact, it was so rare he told me that at any given time, only about 6 people in the entire WORLD contract it. It builds up protein (I THINK ?) around all your major organs, and quite quickly crushes them all, he contributed his entire remains to 'Science' on microscope slides, to all the Medical Schools in the world, to study. His wife told me that all they buried of him was a lock of his reddish hair, and if you remember, his favourite 'yellow'ish' leather jacket. After his passing, as an example of his 'niceness' , if you ever admired any of his equipment (in my case, his shotgun speed-feeders), someone would arrive at your front door WITH said piece of equipment, that Elwin had bequeathed to YOU ! THAT'S a HELL of a guy !
I started this Match many years ago, primarily to support his Widow (who's name escapes me, Kathy ?) and their children. Quite a few years later, she came to me at Mission Rod and Gun, who had taken 'The Memorial' over as there just weren't enough 'Practical' shooters (ONE, in fact) left at Chilliwack to run it. She told me that, 'Elwin was a 'sucker' for any Insurance Salesman that approached him, and his family was VERY well taken care of as a result, Mortgage paid, College paid, etc., and frankly didn't NEED the money, and to contribute it elsewhere.' So, a vote was taken, I was for 'Breast Cancer Research', but was outvoted in favour of 'BC Children's Hospital', so that's where our proceeds went.
I was not a member of Chilliwack Fish and Game at the time, but upon moving to Chilliwack, I discovered that not only did the 'Memorial' 'expire' during my 'divorce mandated' (i.e. all MONEY going to Lawyers) absence from shooting, but also that Chilliwack Fish and Game had a long standing bursary in Elwin's name at the local High School ! So thusly, in Elwin's memory, and that of other 'Active Shooters' who left us before their time, which is why it was also voted on to change the name to a more 'encompassing' name, 'The Memorial', we are 're-booting' it .
I, for one, and others like yourself, will NEVER forget Elwin, and can only WISH I could be as "nice" a guy as Elwin was (shooting a revolver as well as he did would be nice too !), he truly was an inspiration to us all .
As an aside, some are trying to find his favourite revolver, a S&W Model 67 Combat Masterpiece, to attend too, we THINK we know who Elwin bequeathed it to, but finding him, and if he still has it, is a challenge.
Thank you for your kind words, I totally agree with you, and am glad you too remember Elwin, I hope you, and any of your 'Contacts', will be able to come to this and future 'Memorials'.
All the best,
Drew
