The Mentor

The Learning Curve Continues...

The young fella is now proudly cooking up his buck for the family, and developing his own dishes / technique as he goes:

From all accounts that buck is tender & tasty!!

Guess I hung him long enough after all...

What model of Winchester is your shotgun that you dropped? I'm sure someone would be willing to donate a stock to a decent person such as yourself.

Thanks Tank! I REALLY Appreciate that thought!
But I have already found a stash of parts for that old Gal, and both stock pieces are included.
Still have to wander down Island to have a boo, but will be doing so soon.

Have a Great Day!!

Ha ha - can attest that the young gun is becoming quite the chef as well. The deal is that he cooks his buck :). By chance he is wearing the same shirt in the pics; however, the first couple are a stroganoff and the second set were fajitas consumed last night. Both were excellent.

This tale keeps getting even better!

Yesterday River Sportsman in Campbell River held their annual Big Buck Contest.
Quite a few entries!

Long story short, our Young Gun took first in Youth, then went on to win Best Overall for 2018!!! :d
He kept the first place prize, a new scattergun.
The Youth prize he returned with these words:

"Young ones like me and him are our future. He should get that prize, and I insist that he does."

Sure as hell made this old heart swell with pride I'll tell you!!

And true to his (and his Pa's nature) they didn't let even a single day go by without trying out the new toy!

Checking the fit:

Ready to shoot:

The report came back that it is a very nice shotgun, with a rather good full choke.
Super tight patterns.
50 rounds today.
Happy Happy!

Yep - Happy Happy all round!! :dancingbanana:

Cabelas held their Big Buck Contest in Naniamo yesterday.
And a rather fitting Finale for this tale occurred...

The Young Gun won Best Buck Overall and Youth once again!

And picked up another fine set of binoculars for doing so!

Must have shaken my hand fifteen times! LOL!

His biggest concern was getting me to agree to take him hunting again this coming fall.
Tried to string him along, but was giggling so hard it was of no use! ;)

Of course my Young Friend!
Would not miss it for the world!!

Cheers!

Congratulations to you both! Great thread. I hope your story inspires others to take up the "burden" of mentorship. When I was younger I felt like it was an obligation to take young folks out hunting. These days, I realize that I have gained so much more from the experience of being a mentor, than it has ever cost me time or money. I'm sure you would agree!

Plus, it's great when a plan comes together after a lot of effort and determination.

Scored in as 112 2/8s good for 350ish all time on the Island. Highly recommend Artistic Wildlife Creations as the man doing the cape mount. Incredible work! It was an amazing day....

But apparently, this fella was dressed with deep bruising in the rear quarters so there is an even better one out there....

Bit of an epilogue to that story...

Since then the Young Gun has been shooting a lot.
He is damned good with both rifles and scatterguns.
In fact he quite often shows many up that are much older / more experienced than he when at the range.
And of course is itching to get hunting for another wall hanger...

Around a year ago the True North Forum held a raffle for a custom 6.5 x 55 Mauser 96.
By some odd stroke of luck, I won it.
Been toying with just what to do with it ever since.
Today I made that decision, and Paid It Forward:

The look on his face says it all...
The cast will be off his leg early next week.
He has promised to get practiced and be ready for when we roll up-Island.
His Pa & I are scheming...
There will be more to the tale soon methinks...

'Tis a very fine day to be alive!!

Cheers,
Nog
