The MG34 Repair and Troubleshooting Thread

Hey Deathrawt.
I'm wondering about my booster cone.
I drilled out to .450". I wonder if that is too big?
I have a cone coming and will try to open it up slowly to see if that makes any difference.
What do you think? What is your cone?

I'm using the smaller 9.5mm cone
I expiremented with bigger cones and found that the smaller ones work the best. The bigger cones would work for hotter loaded ammo I think
If your new cone has the smaller hole leave it and try it as is
I ruined one cone by going too big. I went over 11mm. The gun would work ok IF I shot slow. Rapid fire was stovepipe city
As for the grease I use lots too and use the super lube from greggs
The cold weather does stiffen things up

You're reloading right? So the 9.5mm cone works for you I'd say.
The new cone I have coming is a .308 cone so I can experiment with different hole sizes.
The book I have does recommend 11mm hole size for 8mm ammo though.
I use Super Lube too, and G96 clp where I think a lighter lube is better.
When I finish the 8mm ammo I have, I'm going to switch to 308. I have lots of that ammo.

Ya I am reloading. I have the 308 conversion kit too and still use the 9.5mm booster cone with it
The 308 kit came with a much smaller one but the instructions say to try the bigger cone first to see how it performs and it works great for me so there was no need to switch cones but every gun is different

Hey, can a crocodile join this alligator party?

I've been working on my M53 and the other day after I finished working on it for the day, field stripping the entire gun, I put the "important parts", the barrel, receiver and bolt back together to store in my safe, per local legal requirements. All the other parts I had cleaned and are in a box, so it's literally just the barrel, receiver and bolt.

Now that I've sat down to work on it, I find that I can't get the bolt to unlock from the barrel. Tugging on it, while pushing the barrel in against the recuperator doesn't seem to help.

What should I do?

Next mystery:

Has anyone here ever assembled an MG42 rear sight? I'm having a hell of a time compressing the spring so that I can get the pin that holds the ramp to the spring base.

Is there some illuminati secret I should know?

I was able to get the rest of the gun assembled (and it looks quite nice - check out my pictures on G0C), except for the rear sight and its driving me mad!

My MG34 is running pretty good now. I use fluid film on the belts and keep everything lubed extra just the way she likes it. ;)

So all issues seem to have been resolved for now....
Fun when it works.

That's great.
I'm happy to report my 34 is running perfectly as well. I was out Tuesday and went through 90 rounds ( 8mm and 308 with one small hiccup. The bolt picked up one round and it jammed in the front of the feed tray.
No big deal. I'm happy.

There is one thing I need to do.
I need to adjust the sights.
It appears to be shooting about 2 feet to the left at 100 yds.
The front sight blade is all the way to the right on the front sight post.
Moving it to the left should help.
Has anyone adjusted sights?

There is a special tool that is used to adjust the sight but it’s rare to find one
You can drift it with a brass punch
I think there is a setscrew that holds the sight in position so check to make sure before you drift it

I was able to order the MG34 - specific sight adjustment tool from International Military Antiques a few years back...just checked the site and it was in stock for $24.95 US. Shippable to Canada with no issues. The tool is awesome!

I did a search and found a sight tool at IMA.
I ordered one last night. It's on it's way
In other news, I went to the range again today and put another 120 ( 308 ) rounds through my 34. Worked great, no hiccups.
It was fun.
