Well here it is, my first "custom" built rifle. With the gun, and most of its parts bought from fellow CGN'ers and site sponsors I figured I put up a couple pics. Haven't shot it yet as I'm having a hard time deciding on what power of scope to use, either something in the 1-6 range or 2-12 for longer stuff. I dunno, any suggestions?? Ranges can go from 0-400yds. Anyways here are the gun specs - Win model 70 CRF classic SS, 24" Bob Jury 1:12 twist barrel, Echols 1pcs bottom metal, bedded B&C stock,Talley quick detach scope rings, Talley peep site, NECG front sight will be ordered shortly.

Wow, a 358 Norma that actually looks good! Laugh2

I would put a 3-9/ 3-10 etc type scope on it. No point in handicapping your self with a low power one unless you want one that is really compact.

Nice build!
Like gatehouse, I'd put a 3.5-10 vx3 b&c on it.
What does it weigh?

Thanks fellas, I'm leaning pretty hard to the 3.5-10 VX3i CDS I must say. As you see the gun now it weighs in just shy of 8lbs. Muzzle dia is .670"

Nice! I'd go with a Nikon Monarch 3 2.5-10x42 NP reticle. Optics quality no different than the Leup VX3 or 3i's, or Zeiss HD5's. Use Talley or Warne 1 pc rings.

I've never owned a Nikon, here good things about them, I've always had VX2 or VX3 Leupolds. Not to say I wouldn't switch, just never took the time to look through one. However I did look through a Swarovski Z3 and it was pretty nice....

Looks good digger, finally a modern .358 that looks like a hunter, post up what your hunting loads are when you get that figured out, I'd be curious to hear what works for you

nice rifle! I have almost the exact same setup other than mine is 35 whelen.

Thanks, I love the Whelen too. Mine is a factory carbine 7600, great for heavy cover hunting.

Will do! I have some factory 250gr Oryx Norma ammo, but I bought some brass to that I'm going to try some 225gr TSX bullets in. Man that factory brass is expensive stuff. If and when you can find it.

Like your calibre choice, and, one of my favorites. ;) Must be as I now have a pair of them. Not custom, but on top, a model 1651 Husqvarna and a model 68DL Schultz & Larsen

I considered this route as well, but I decided to make it my "own". Trade Ex had a couple I looked at. Very nice examples JP!

I'd pass on the sights, cut the bbl to 22" & use a VX3 2.5-8 in QD rings and another scope for backup.

Very nice project you did there. :)

Norma 250gr factory ammo is rated at 2756 fps muzzle speed. Nosler 250gr and 225gr load data for comparison -

For comparison I have a 350 Remington Magnum built on a long action (Remington 798, 24" 1:12 McGowen Precision barrel), and with the long magazine I can increase COAL to load the 310gr Woodleigh bullet at 2500 fps. For fun I loaded the Hornady 250gr SP and these chronographed at 2724 fps. Re17 works great in my 350 RM.

Nice rifle.........I have pondered building one several times or the 35-300WM, however then I look at my rack and there are two 350 RM and my 9.3X300 WM and 3 or 4 375s and my 340 Wby and I ask myself WHY?????? Not like there are any ballistic holes to fill..........However if I were to come across a cheap 35 cal 24" barrel threaded up for a 700 ..........well who knows what might happen.
Anyway it looks good and you have one hell of a game slayer............I recommend 250 Nosler Parts or ABs and at least a Leupold 2.5-8 scope.
If you get tired of paying for Norma brass, they are easily made from 300 WM brass if you don't care about headstamps..........Neck up to 35 cal...run through 358 N full length die and trim..........that's it!!

So you're saying the 350RM has more jam than the 358NM?

I think some proviso about equal pressures needs to be interjected here somewhere..........:eek:

Also Mig, you might notice that it is displayed on a Chrony screen so that means that it will probably be within 200 fps of the display............:p:p;);)

since it's an EE parts gun, maybe top it with a glossy purple Leupold Vari X II 3-9x40 in some tip off Weavers :dancingbanana: and being a 35 cal, make sure you load up some plinkers with 38 special bullets.
