The Model 70 is Back

I'm a little concerned about the new MOA trigger system. Especially when I read about the new three lever system used on the Browning X-bolt. If the model seventy trigger adds a housing and another couple of parts, that is hardly a step forward. The Model 70 trigger was a very good trigger. It is unlikely any change will be an improvement.
Too bad about those WSMs. I hoped they were gone. Regards, Bill.

Agreed on the trigger. The old model 70 trigger left very little room for improvement. Time will tell.

Otherwise, what's wrong with the WSM's? Or are you just one of those 'everything new is scary and bad' types? Admittely the WSM's bring little new to the table, but so what? It's not like there's not already a ton of redundancy in cartridge selection. Whatever gets people excited about buying new guns is a good thing IMHO.

Though, reading between the lines, it seems that they will only be building long action m70's for now. Chambering a WSM in a long action is absurd, as it defeats the whole point.

All kidding aside, Leeper doesn't like WSM's but the one he built for me is my very favorite rifle, and it's a pleasure to shoot and hunt with.:)

Huh??

Reading above the lines:

The Featherweight Deluxe has an angled comb walnut stock with Schnabel fore-end and satin finish with elegant cut checkering. It will be offered in popular long and short action calibers, including WSM chamberings. Suggested Retail $999.00 to $1,049.00.

They're not going to build long actions only, are they???

Several times they specifically mention popular long action and 'short-action WSM calibers.' Which is slightly different than 'short action calibers, including the WSM's.' Maybe I'm wrong. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Also recall that the old push-feed m70 when it was first introduced was only made in long action. You could get short action calibers, but you got a long action design with a bolt and mag stop.

At that price let's hope it performs like the tikkas or TC. I'll be interesting to see if we'll be able to get them in Canada because of the damn UN stamp thing. Let's hope they extend the amenesty permanently.

M70

Too bad they aren't being made in japan, but I'm happy to see them back.

Hopefully they are good rifles.:)

Part of me agrees with your sentiment. All the Japanese Browning reproductions I handled have been excellent quality. Seems a rifle like the M70 should be made in the States though. Quality will have to be better than it was, the competition is stiff.

I'd like to see them come from the factory with Williams bottom metal, or something similar.

Also, I'm not sure about the changes to the trigger, nothing wrong with the old style that a little Quality Control wouldn't fix. It was one of the best designs ever, IMO.

BLASPHAMY :jerkit: I'd own a 100 yard 4" grouping, worn out M70 before I'd even entertain the thought of a t3 in my vault

lol, agreed. The m70 is somehow classier than the current generation of Tikka's. Though I have room in my heart and gun cabinet for a t3, it has not exactly knocked my socks off. But boy, does it shoot

I can't warm up to my T3 .300 Win Mag either. Sure it shoots (Once I bedded it) but it feels like a toy. The stock finish seems to be water soluable as well. I'll take a M70 thanks.

Although I'm not a t3 fan by any stretch of the imagination, my long time hunting partner (RIP :() used an older Tikka Whitetail Hunter 7Mag he bought new back in the early 80's. Sold, well built and accurate. His scope crapped out so he checked his factory open sights at the range. Try 1.5" for 3 shots. I have a hard time doing that with a scope at 100 yards, let alone with open sights...at 200 yards  And you can quickly drop a cartridge in the open breech, slam the bolt home & be ready for action unlike those t3's

Just proves that if you use a superior cartridge like the WSM's you can even make rocks bleed. THAT DEADLY!

All kidding aside I'm glad they are bringing them back. I know a grizzly couldn't pry my M70 out of my hands I love it so much. Here's just hoping they have a decent 375WSM by the end of next year and I still need to replace my 22-250 so a decent varmint stock and barrel would be appreciated. The nice thing about all of this is now I'll only ever have to keep Savages and Winchesters in my presence. With the lack of Winchesters I was starting to consider Ruger as a maker of repute :p
