Been looking around the net for reviews on the most accurate .17 hornady, I have handled the marlins and savages and just dont like the fit and finish , I LOVE the looks of the Ruger 77/17 but have heard lackluster reports on its accuracy.....Or just get a CZ.....Ideas suggestions.....other manufactures....cost is not a real concern.

Jennis, I am no expert as I have only had my CZ Varmint for a week, but all I have read and heard is the cartridge is so good that its performance variance from gun to gun is minimal. I think the CZ American is a real nice rim fire, and if money's no object I would look at the Sako Quad. Mine has a 5 - 15 X 40 3200 on it and it seems to be a good combination.

Anschutz model 1717
or Volquartzen 10/17

(Anschutz is the most accurate rifle out of box, heavily customized volquartzen 1722 holds world record 100 yard group)

Can't speak for all of them but my Ruger 77/17 shoots itty bitty groups. I would think you take your chances with any rifle although certainly Anschutz and CZ have a reputation for building accurate rifles.

I'm still waiting on my CZ 452 Varmint in 22LR but the 17HMR that I handled looked really nice. The Ruger 77 is nice but about 50% higher in cost than the CZ. Lots of accessories available for the CZ also.

At 1750 (USD) I think I will grab a ruger/cz !!!!!!!!!!
Is that the US suggested retail on the Sako Quad? You can get it here for about $1700 Canadian for all four barrels or about $1000 for one barrel.

I read the magazine artical on the Sako Quad (easy interchangable barrels for 17HMR, 17M2, 22LR, 22WMR) but for the price I would rather just buy separate rifles! I mean unless you really need just one rifle to save space and / or weight on a trip I think it is over priced.

marlins and savages will outshoot CZ ruger out of the box anyday. I owna a marlin and my cousin owns a CZ american mine will group better everyday

I'm planning on getting into the 17 caliber craze very shortly...I have shot a couple of my buddies rifles (both marlins) and love the long distance fun this little cartridge offers. I've read many reports on the 17 and a lot of people are talking about the CZ.... even a local gun shop....however I must point out that the Savage 17 calibers are newly outfitted with the accutrigger for 2006 and will be available in my area by the end of March (supposedly). They have the 17 available with a number of different options....beavertail target stocks...thumbhole stocks...stainless steel...etc... I have a 17HMR BVSS on order with accutrigger.... I just love that grey laminate combined with stainless steel! Before you buy another brand....consider that Savage has a rimfire rifle plant in Canada.... also in my humble opinion and my considerable shooting experience... a heavy barreled savage rifle with the accutrigger is probably the most potentially accurate out of the box rifle made.
Can't wait for mine to arrive....
I'd love give a few CZ owners...savage envy! :D

It'll outshoot the out of the box guns like the $1500+ Kimber's, Walther's, Anschutz's???

LOL I never said it would outshoot anything.....that's not the guns job!... That's up to the shooter.... I personally would definitely not be afraid to sqare off against any other out of the box rifle.... in the right hands....a heavy barreled savage with accutrigger is a serious machine!... You don't have to pay $1500 for good groups...after all most of the game is trigger control and breathing anyway. But if you have the money to burn and you need to spend $1500 to gain confidence.... I wouldn't discourage you.:D

I agree that most of the game is trigger control and breathing. And also timing. ;)

Good groups? Hell I can even get them out of my $25 Cooey Mod 60 though the trigger pull on that gun leaves something to be desired! Good groups but not great groups. When the 7 months of winter is finally over here I'm going to the range and do some serious comparisons on some of my recent purchases. :) Perhaps I'll yet buy the Savage with the AccuTrigger and compare it to the Brno CZ. You almost have me talked into it actually... :D

17 Envy

Now don't you Savage boys or CZ boys go making silly statements there is a reason Volquartsen holds the 100 yard record. You get what you pay for.(LOL)

Gollum257... I bet if you gave the guy that shot that 100yd record with the Volquartsen rifle, a heavy barreled savage with accutrigger instead....he'd have similar results. I really do belive that they are capable of top notch performance... it just seems that the real serious competitors want to pay more for a rifle....:D

Heck I like most guns, just like I like most women. Though I prefer the European ones myself. :D

Long as they work reliably for me... ;)

Kind of lean more towards Anschutz's myself.

Nothing wrong with Savage either. After all aren't the Savage/Anschutz guns great shooters?

Sorry to the Savage owner's here (Just kidding). Couldn't resist. :p

Not even close, he (Dave Snow)put ten rounds into essentially the exact same hole at 100 under observed competition conditions. All the rounds were within a few thousandths of an inch center to center. The best you can expect from the savage even from a machinr rest is to put 10 in about 1/4" CTC. That's more than 100 times bigger than the record group. You cant shoot record .17HMR groups with a bolt gun, no matter how good it is: it shifts too much on the bags when you work the bolt. The VQ rifle had a cryoed barrel, custom lapped, molyed, and bedded in a dedicated benchrest stock with a complex damping system that involved separate muzzle, barrel, and receiver mounted tuners.

Savage 17HMR

I would have to agree with one of the last posts....i opted out with the Savage target bbl with the walnut stock. I started out with a BSA Sweet 17 scope and just receintly bought a Leupold 4-12x40mm for it and I would welcome any other gun to the bench.

The Savage is a tack driver! Buy a Savage and with the $$ you save but a good scope!!
