....not shooting a turkey!
What a day.
Some will read this and wonder how it was a good day, others will understand and smile as I am now.
Alarm clock - 4am
Dressed, out the door - 4:25
Buddy's driveway, gear into his truck, on the road coffee in hand - 5am
Dropped off at field edge - 5:15
Blind up, decoy out, ready for birds (gun in sock and still unloaded
) - 5:35
Call call call wait
Call call call wait
Call call call wait
.....see where this is going....
First radio contact with partner, confirms no sightings but a few distant gobbles - 8:30
Second radio contact confirms "no joy" terminate in 45 minutes - 9:30
Gear packed, blind collapsed, decoy away, unloaded - 10:00
Rendez Vous at mid-point to truck - 10:30....but wait....what's that in the lower valley?
Insert expletive....two jakes.
Buddy's gear too far away (already stopped at truck), one set of gear, two guys, we can make this work.
I got the 11-87, you take the call (momma didn't raise no fool
)
Set the deak back up, retreat 20 yards and find natural cover. Me, back to the bush, facing my deak, buddy on the call, 5 yards back and burried in bush. Sweet.
Cluck cluck puuurrrrr....
Cluck cluck puuurrrrr....
GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE!!!!
Great, right? Not so much! TWO gobblers worked around and are approaching to my 6...and buddy's 6.
They get to my 3 at 12 yards out, but so close, I cannot swing the required 90 degrees. They got hung up, retreat back into the bush.
Smart as I am
I turn now and face where they were (what was my 3 is now 12 and opens up a full 180 deg if that makes sense) should have been here in the first place.
Now back out come our two randy jakes, 10 yards back and now at my 3.....but so is my buddy
.
All I could do was watch as they farted around, lost interest and buggered off.
Literally 5 yards off my pal's boots, and he never saw a thing because he was face down calling like man posessed. He was face down because when he dropped off his gear, he stripped some camo and the only thing to do with him was bury him deep while we tried to make this happen.
So....how many guys have had two jakes at 12 yards...twice...and not had a shot?
We killed ourselves laughing all the way home, and will remember this morning for a good long time!
To all those who've posted, bummed about missed opportunities or days you got skunked - part of the game we play and one of the best reasons to get out and do it again!
Go get 'em!
