The move to Rimefire only

I’m thinking of selling off all my reloading gear and other firearms and concentrate only on rimefire. Have others out there done this? Are you satisfied? Is it worth the cost savings? The reason I’m thinking of doing this because of family (New Baby) and the cost associated to center fire weapons. I have a good collection built up. Right now my fire arms are setting in my safe as a collection because of the cost to shoot. Please tell me what you think

Haven't done it, but have recently thought it. In the same boat (new baby, work taking a lot of my time, too many projects, etc). I don't think I'll go selling off all my non-rim fires, but for the next couple of years that and airguns are all I'll have the time for.

Been there, done that. I went as far as a single airgun as my only shooting outlet. When the available time to shoot and the money to shoot situation changed I started to rearm. I buy and sell on a whim. If I like it I buy it and if I dont end up shooting it I sell it. As long as the hobby is a little self suporting in the cash flow area all is well.
Got any nice 22lr bolt actions, Remington 11-87 shotguns or minty Lee Enfields you might want to sell out of your collection?

I'm somewhat in a similar situation. I like to shoot 22LR more than my centerfire rifles and pistols/revolvers, but am not willing to part with all of my centerfires. I reload for my handguns but cost is still a little higher than 22LR. I got rid of the Garand because I do not reload for it and reloads are still expensive.

I think you should hang on to all your guns for as long as there is food on the table. If you sell now, replacing them will be more expensive in the future, and this higher cost may prevent you from getting back into the sport.

I'm sure you work hard to support your family and you deserve to have fun too. A man's gotta have his toys.

Ya kids suck up the $ but if I were you I would keep the best of your collection for later in life, they grow up quick! It wont cost anything to store & you wont be kicking your self later for selling just my 2 cents worth

Keep your collection! In the future "they"(conservatives, liberals, bloc or ndp) may change the "rules" and you will have "sold" yourself "out" of a "class or two". I like rim fire the best because it is cheap to shoot targets etc. Center fire is good to have for hunting etc.

I have a three old, and one on the way. I (we) have decided to make one "last " purchase, and thats it. So far, my 3 year old has more than enough "things". The one thing i cannot deprive him of, is love and attention. So if your providing the essentials, with quality time, your doing good (eg. take to parks, go fishing). Go out a spend an hour at the range, its a great stress reliever. When they grow up, take them with you.

I find myself leaning more and more towards rimfire. For $50.00 you can get 1000 rounds and shoot all day to your hearts content. I just recently bought a Ruger Mark III and in 2 weeks have put 3 times more rounds through it then I have in the year that I'm owned my Sig P226R. Don't get me wrong, I like my 9mm and have no desire to part with it. In fact a 9mm 1911 and a CZ Shadow are still on my want list. But, I also want to build a custom 10/22 and perhaps a Charger. A Browning Buck Mark would be nice too, for comparison sake.....and a Savage Model 93 and a CZ 452.....

Now if there was only a rimfire version of IDPA or IPSC........

Keep your centrefires; odds are that you will eventually regret it if you sell them. The cost to replace them in the future will likely be higher.

+1 here. They grow up really fast and free time will return. I kept all mine and was glad I did. My oldest is 5 and I'm now starting the think about his first pow-pow as he used to call 'em.

+2. It may seem like a long road, but the reality is that in 6 years your newborn is in school and you will have more spare time. Plus, you get to show them your cool gun collection, teach them how to properly and safely handle firearms, take them on their first hunt, etc. If you raise them well you can end up with a shooting and hunting buddy for life.

I would just store the centerfire stuff for now and then you have them if/when your interests turn back that way. Keep in mind that firearms are not going down in value, M1 Garands were ~$300 a few years ago and are now $800+ for the most part. You won't get that much from selling a bunch of your stuff off and it will probably cost you 2-3x that to replace it in 5 years.

Oh yeah, I shoot 10x the rimfire to centerfire, easily. It is cheap, great practice and fun. Hard to beat that deal.

Shoot .22 and Hang On!

Hang on to your collection. It won't cost you anything to leave them sitting in the cabinet. When your finances improve you'll be glad you kept them.:)

Amen to the above. in some 75 years of buying & selling, I've only made one bad purchase, several very bad trades, but worst of all, lost thousand of $ selling stuff, that today is worth much more than the money that I had invested.:(

If we can keep the liberals out of power and eventually achieve sensible gun control in this country, then what you keep could very well help your kids through school etc. - and you will have there use when times loosen up.:)

Good luck in your choice and I know it's a dilema.

Good Luck and best wishes from this old guy.

I sold off my single shot collection. I thought I did not shot them so why not. I miss them & will never be able to replace them. Time will come when you will have time to shoot again. Keep what you have and injoy shooting what you can.

I too have been throwing around the idea as this same issue or close to it. as a person who just bought a new handgun & built a custom AR15. I'm also thinking, the long run is it worth it these days.

I have been thinking between the handgun & my AR that is $3G's tied up and I can only shoot it at the range where I have to drive 1 hour one way, plus members fees for that cost.
I also could put back some money in my pocket and have 2 good varmint guns like Savage .17HMR and a Ruger 10/22 done up. No members fees and I can shoot at a ton of places.

So yes been thinking about this very hard right now. just it's hard to part with my AR man she's nice.

Babies don't stay babies
Years will roll by quicker than you think'
You've already dropped the coin for what you have and replacing them later on down the road could be VERY expensive.

My "baby" now stands 6'2" and weighs a lean 200lb.
During the "early" years , I put him behind the good ol' .22
Today , he's a deadeye shot and can shoot a Lee Enfield or a 12ga. one handed ;)
I get to do it all over again with 2 grandson's who are full of questions about guns n' huntin'

well i came close to the same idea, then i figured well i will go deer hunting one more time before i sell my collection well needles to say i was hooked again, but i have stream lined my collection and to stop myself from getting to side tracked i sorta narrowed myself down to a theme and a few brands i shoot mostly cz & annie rimfires, k-31's and cg63 swede mausers and tikka & CZ hunting rifles
