The mythical .270...

just sold a 270 Win today and waiting for word on another one...have a feeling it's sold too....what's so great about a 270 Win?...now a 280 Rem...there's a cartridge a guy can like...:D..let the flames begin.....now where's that fireproof suit..?:p

No doubt, 280's pretty near the perfect round for most Canadian hunting, but you ain't gonna pull in to Wally Tire and pick up a last minute emergency box for $20.

I plan ahead before going on a hunt so I never find myself in that situation.

I own a Browning A-bolt Hunter in 270 which is one of my most accurate rifles and is a perfect round for deer.

The .270 is a little light for moose IMO. Don’t get me wrong the 270 will kill a moose if you put the bullet in the right place. I have never shot a moose with it as I always reach out for other alternatives (308, 300 and 45/70).

Anybody here who uses 130 grain TTSX's in a 270? I'm wondering what type of velocities I could expect...

I've reloaded some 130g TSX's(non-tipped) and was getting around 3100 fps with 60 gr. of RL22 out of a 22" Rem.700 MTN.
Accuracy was not great, as I've found with Barnes before. I also shoot the 140 SST's and they do great damage. Not a meat bullet, but lots of blood to follow!! :) I would only use them on deer or other thin skinned animals though.

Best all-around performer for me has been a 150 Nosler Partition.

My rifles did not shoot the original x bullets with much accuracy, but they do shoot the tsx, mrx, and ttsx very accurately. They are however more sensitive to seating depth.

The .270 Win with 130 grain Triple Shocks (in a Tikka 695) worked like a charm on most of my African plains game back in '07. The norm was bang-flops with awesome penetration. Most of the guys in our group used a .270 Win. with either the TSX, 130 grain Hornady Interbond or plain vanilla local factory ammo.

Either way the results were very consistent. Its a fabulous cartridge, for sure. :)

If any recent members want to see the proof...

.270 I missed it!

Had one in Ruger M77 sporter laminated stainless with a Leupold 3x9x50. Nice rifle. Thought I needed more power and went to a 7mm Rem. My shoulder still has not forgiven me. I picked up the Rem 700 CDL .270 in stainless fluted with a clip last week. No more flinching. :D:D

Alright Jaydog! I am chomping at the bit to get mine, hoping it will be here next week. The stock needed some cosmetic touch ups and the nice guy selling it to me took care of that . It should be dry now and on it's way soon.

I ordered some 130 grain TTSX's from Todbartel's shop. scope is waiting to be mounted and I already have some loads ready to go for it...

thinking about the A7 in 270.....for some reason I keep going back to the 270, this would be no.3 .

One of the nice things of a 270 is that you dont' necessarily need premium bullets for it....150 gr. sp's at 2850 for just about anything.

The rifle is here, has been in hte safe fir a short while nad I've had no time to shoot it. It is LIGHT, very light. I slapped on a Leupold Rifleman on it nad put 5 rounds in the mag and I can't even say how light it is. No one will believe me, I have to check my scale to make sure it ain't broken...

Pictures will be up tomorrow evening. And to the one who suggested that .270's would start popping up on hte exchange, how did you guess???

I have a Browning A bolt in 270,my favourite for longer range deer,moose,elk.For shorter ranges I bring my 444 marlin.I have a 30 06 I used to hunt with and a 30 30,and a 308 for target shooting,Norc;my 270 does everything I need it to do.

I do not want to hijack your thread mate, but at the same time do not want to make a new one. So I will just say quickly, I want to get a rifle in .270 WSM, I have been looking mostly at the Savage Arms 16FCSS. Has anyone used this rifle, and what are your thoughts? Also what other rifles would you suggest (I know many of you have already mentioned it in this thread, so you do not need to do so twice.)

cheers

Ryan

The .270 is so flat shooting, that it is the perfect calibre for hunters who don't spend a lot of time at the range. You know where the bullet is going to land. you can get the same trajectory with other calibres, but at the expense of recoil induced detached retinas.
