I've never owned a .270 before but of course have heard lot's about this caliber. I just bought a Remington Montain rifle in that caliber and plan on shooting 130 grain TTSX's in it. This one is a really light rifle, and will be my dedicated sheep, goat and alpine mulie rig.

So let's hear opinions on the caliber, good bad or ugly? Jack O'Connor could not be completely wrong!

I view the 270win as being larger than necessary for deer sized game,but on the minimum size for elk and moose.As such,I don't have a use for it.
 
You're going to hear from 270 Win lovers and Haters.
The botton line is,with the proper bullet and bullet placement,it will kill anything you want to kill.
Elk & Moose haven't gotten any tougher than they were when Jack O'Conner was smoking them.
 
Last year, .270WSM with 150grain Accu-Tips. Not *quite* a .270 WCF I know...but...

The only rifle you will ever need! :rockOn: I have 3!. With literally dozens of options available when I open my gun safe, 80% of the time it is either the 270 win or 270 wsm. 10% of the time it is a 338 win mag. The other 10% is split on nostalgia rifles I want to carry for a day here or there.

Seriously though, with a good bullet put in the right spot, outstanding performance.

I have swithced to the 130 triple shock in my 270 WSM. I have a bullet retrieved from an elk, under the skin on the opposite side killed at 346 ydrs (+/- the error of a Leica CRD 1200). It could be used as one of the photographed bullets in the Barns reloading manual.

The only guys who do not like a 270 are the guys who are crazy about the 280.

Get one and you will be happy!
 
The .270 works, and there is little need to look further. If you can't do it with this cartridge combined with todays great bullets, chances are it can't be done. Sounds like you have a fine mountain rifle.
 
I used a .308 for years. Then I got bit by the magnum bug and went to a .300WM so that I could get more distance. My .308 was low recoil and accurate. The .300 would reach out there, but the one I got is light and beats the heck out of me so it's not a favorite. I never really looked at the .270. It wasn't that popular where I grew up, and I always preached that nothing could beat a .30 caliber. Then a couple years ago I got a steal of a deal on a .270. I really didn't know if I wanted the gun, and bought it with the intention of reselling it. THEN I SHOT IT. Recoil of a .308. It reaches out well past the distance that I can shoot accurately. It has become the one that I reach for, whether it's hunting for deer, or coyotes in the pasture. I trust it to do everything, and it's never let me down.
 
Compare it's ballistics to the 7MM Magnum with all comparable bullet weights but the heaviest bullets and you'll find the 270 impressive. If you want to go a tad heavier, the 280 is a similiar better choice.

Being that your going for a Ultra light weight rifle, consider going to short action to save just a little more weight. A 7mm-08 in a R700 Mtn Rifle would be a nice set up.
 
The 270 is a great cartridge. It will reach further than "MOST" should consider shooting at a game animal. I have pretty well settled on 140 grain hornady handloads, with a stiff charge of reloader 22 behind them. Sold the 270 winchester a "few" years ago, and settled on the 270 weatherby magnum. Took 1 elk with the 270 winchester, with 130 grain. Complete penetration on an almost broadside shot.You won't be disappointed with it's performance.

I think that the 270win is in a short list of truley good cartridges. I prefer the 30-06 myself for an all around rifle, but I think that it's the cats meow for what you are going to use it for. I have to aknowledge though, that even the cartridge that I think that the most ill-designed of them all (the 300win mag) cartridge will still kill animals very well when the right bullet is used.
Side note............think about the gentry 3 position safety to turn your remington into a truely great gun.

Congrats on your new rifle in .270 Win. ------ I think your really going to like it. I bought a Husqvarna Crown Grade .270 Win. in 1959 / 60, and still the nicest, most accurate rifle I own, and I have a lot of them. It is one hell of a caliber, fast, flat shooting and hard hitting !! ------ You can,t go wrong with a .270, in my option :) !!! --- Cheers
 
With a 130gr bullet /57gr of IMR 4831/Win cases and a Mag primer you're good to go...............mice to moose...............Harold
