I received this via email this morning from Glock USA..

"This is a special time in the history of GLOCK. On August 30, GLOCK, Inc. will be announcing the launch of our new G17 Gen5 and G19 Gen5 pistols. Because you are a member of GLOCK ID, we wanted you to hear the news first, from us, before the general public finds out.

The G17 Gen5 and G19 Gen5 pistols were inspired by the GLOCK M pistols used by the FBI and include many features the GLOCK community has been asking for. There are over 20 design changes which differentiate our Gen5 pistols from their Gen4 predecessors, including a flared mag-well, a new nDLC finish, the GLOCK Marksman Barrel, ambidextrous slide stop levers, and a grip which has no finger grooves.

These pistols will be available at your favorite GLOCK dealer beginning August 30. We hope you will go in to see them and try them.

Thank you for your continued support."

The slide doesn't match the frame ... real quality and attention to detail ...

Glocks are flooding the EE already, and I imagine that this will further reduce resale on previous generation Glocks. A good opportunity for CGN'ers who don't care about the new features. I know I will be buying a Gen 5, as soon as Rampart has them in stock. I also like the subtle changes to the Gen 5 Mags.

Glock is perfection, an ongoing saga of maintaining perfection with their Gen5.

reminds me about this article from thetruthaboutguns :

Reliability
Many people have the misconception that a GLOCK cannot fail. However this is false. GLOCKs have failed. And while they do not fail often, most modern handguns from a reputable manufacturer can live up to that reputation. Springfield can do it. Smith & Wesson can do it. SIG can do it. The list goes on. At one point in time they might have been the most reliable guns but other manufacturers have caught up to (and possibly exceeded) GLOCK.

Aesthetics
To be put quite bluntly, the GLOCK is about as aesthetically pleasing as a brick. This is nothing that we haven’t all heard a thousand times. With a blocky slide and a face flat enough to make a pug jealous, the GLOCK doesn’t adopt the idea that form follows function. It just gets rid of form entirely. And with so many beautifully designed guns on the market, no one is choosing the GLOCK for its aesthetic appeal.

Accuracy
There is not much to say on this topic. For me, the GLOCK can shoot more accurately than I can. But so can most guns. Taking my abilities aside, there are much more accurate guns on the market. The GLOCK’s accuracy isn’t bad, but its also nothing to write home about. It’s on par with where it should be. But that doesn’t set it apart from its competition.

Ergonomics
I grew up shooting GLOCK. They are comfortably to me because they were the first real guns I knew. But just about any gun store you walk into, you can hear someone complaining about GLOCKs. “They don’t point right for me”, “The grip doesn’t fit my hand”, or “The finger grooves don’t work for me” are all quite common to hear. It simply comes down to the fact that many people just aren’t comfortable with GLOCK.

So why do we see them everywhere?
A portion of the explanation can be attributed to their law enforcement sales. There will always be the tacticool crowd that wants to carry whatever the police or Navy SEALs are issued. But the love for GLOCK goes beyond that.

GLOCKs have been around for over 30 years. People have been dealing with the issues associated with GLOCK pistols for a long time. Every one of the issues with GLOCK has inspired some form of factory or aftermarket solution. Every part on the gun can be replaced and tailored to fit the end user’s needs.

Sights, barrels, and recoil springs are just a few. Don’t like the trigger? There is a whole host of parts set up to make them nicer. Want to shoot cast lead ammo? Cool just buy a new barrel. If you want an RMR cut or forward cocking serrations You can get those flavors too.

GLOCKs suck. But your GLOCK doesn’t have to. GLOCKs are a lot like Legos. You can build almost anything you want out of them. That’s where their beauty lies.

Glock is perfection, an ongoing saga of maintaining perfection with their Gen5.

More to the point they are updating an old design to entice existing users to flock to the most recent version of "perfection". Compare a stock Glock trigger to a PPQ or SIG 320 or an HK then come back and tell us about perfection.

Yes, the Sig p320 is awesome. Fires without the trigger even being pressed. The patented gravity fire system. Pinnacle of innovation, eliminates the user from the discharge decision to shave a few tenths.

Ppl can trash Glock gen5 all they want, but Glock is clearly listening to their critics yet the critics are beating them up for it.

Ambi controls, more conventional rifling, removing the awful finger grooves. Making the slide more holster friendly and loss blocky, better grip texture, modular grip, Ambi mag release, improved magazines, etc.

Why is any of that a bad move for Glock?

Au contraire, it is nice to see Glock catching up. They are listening to the competition not their existing users. As to the 320, well you did find a silver lining in a rather big cloud that will be fixed, just like the unsupported Glock barrels of yesteryear. That said, Glock will be a block with a terrible trigger out of the box with at best so, so accuracy. Compare it to the PPQ and then we can talk perfection.

The Glock is not perfect, no way would I claim that.

But it's also nowhere near the outdated POS I'm hearing in this thread. It also benefits from staying power, parts availability, and mostly backwards compatibility moreso than virtually all is competitors.

As an aside, Glock triggers go from awful to decent with just factory parts. If every Glock came stock with the OEM 4.5# "minus" connector and factory 5.5# spring, people would have a much better opinion of them, but then they would not meet the 5# IPSC standard for production. Which is a stupid rule imho, one not even present in other IPSC jurisdictions like the states.

I'm not a blind Glock supporter by any stretch, but those are 3 absolutely horrendous examples. The HK USP had the worst trigger of any gun I've ever shot, the PPQ (although great for range use) has been deemed too light for duty use, and the 320... well, really, you're going to talk up the trigger of the 320?

just try CZ shadow, tanfoglio or Jericho's trigger ;)
