The NEW KING of the 270 Calibers

The .277 caliber is a pretty interesting one.

Unlike the 7mm or 30 cal it's been one that has barely been explored. it's impossible to count how many factory 30 cals exist, they are everywhere! :)

The 270 Win has a bunch of stories behind it, like Winchester meant to introduce a 7mm but didn't want to call it a a 7mm due to European connections, or someone made a mistake in bore/rifling and it ended up as a .277. But who knows?

But after the 270 came the 270 WBY. Weatherby, always ready to make something "bigger and better" but in typical WBY fashion not really understanding what the majority of people wanted. No wonder that when the 7RM came along the 7RM flourished while the 270 WBY died...Kudos to Weatherby to finally entering the 20th century in the 21st century and offering a non belted cartridge though. :)

,The after that...except for some specialized cartridges like the 6.8, nothing until the 270 WSM. The 270 WSM was Winchesters second best selling WSM cartridge. But IIRC it also used a 1-10 twist which just makes it a slightly faster 270 Win. Of course, Winchester still sold more 270WSM than WBY ever sold 270WBY's!

Noslers new offering changes the game a little, with a 1-8.5 twist rifle and their new 165gr 270 bullet.

New cartridges always make some people mad and demand "why do we need this new cartridge." They always sound like people that say that we have chocolate and vanilla ice cream, so there is NO NEED for strawberry ice cream. :)

We will see where this new .277 goes....:)

Part of me wants Waetherby do do the same thing they did to the 26 Nosler and next year at SHOT be all like "This year we'd like to introduce the all new 270-378 Weatherby Magnum"

That's all WBY has, most of the time. Looking to the past instead of the future. It seems they may have come around to the future, offering a beltless cartridge now.

Yeah, I think you might have missed the point of both my post, and what Weatherby does when they introduce something like the 6.5x300. Of course, you also think the 375 Ruger is something noteworthy so, uh, yeah.

That is a truely, over-bored waste of powder & barrels in my book. Hard pass. f:P:

not as overbore as CGN's beloved 257 Wby

Apples to apples, this 27 Nosler will give a solid 125 fps edge over a 270 Wby Mag, 175 fps over a 270wsm, and 325 fps over a 270 Winchester

For open country hunters who love the romance of the 277 diameter, this is worthy of a look

January blues.
Nothing happening...let's troll. Guilty here...yep.
Every now and again a newer calibre shines. 338 Lapua, 6.8 Creedmore seems OK.
Owning up to rolling with the Old favorites...guilty as charged.
But not every latest and greatest is a 'New King' ...gets tiring

So its a .277 rum then. 7 rum is the ultimate barrel burner.

Suppose it has merits. If nothing else, it might inspire further development in high bc hunting bullets in .277, and barrel steel technology. It will still only be chambered in Nosler rifles, thats worked out so well. What would 25 nosler cases be worth. So better and worse for longevity, Roy Weatherby business model.

Biggest limitation I see is a lack of quality vld (and heavier) bullets in this calibre.

Well with new rounds like this being made there will be more bullet made as well to use in them.

People here really seem to not like new things, or maybe its just gatehouse im not sure. But yeah i guess all ammo companies should stop making new rounds as everything older, slower and longer is better. Who ever needs 150-200fps more, Or who needs the same thing but in a LA or if you cant buy that new ammo in ever corner of the globe the day its released its useless. "Ma grand dad didn't need it so nor do i"

i wouldn't call it the new king my self but it is a new option and its never bad to have new options

Do note this is coming from a guy that shoots black powder in lots of cases, prefer rounds that are obsolete, and like cast bullets in everything. The newest developed round i have is a 284win. Most are pre smokeless/ pre 1900

The ballistics are undeniably awesome and so will be the blast. It’s a tad too much for me but I can’t pretend I wouldn’t be happy to have a mountain goat client lined up on his billy with one to remove more variables, if he carried his own rifle all the way there- these aren’t going to be lightweights.

No secret I’m rather traditional but also like speed, for now I’ll stick with the .270 and 7 Mag, but can’t scoff at any of the Noslers aside from their impracticality in weight for mountain backpack work. When it’s all simmered down I like the .270/.280/.284 range of capacities and rifles, as the guns can be 6lbs all up and not tear your cheek off. The .270 Sig round is interesting, appears it may pave the way to higher pressures in light rifles. But time will tell.

On a tangent if I was building a lightweight, flat shooting rifle I’d presently make it a fast twist .25-284, but ask me next week.

Yes Sir.

Mine gets 3200 out of a 24" barrel, and 130s leave the muzzle at 3500+.

The other thread about the most versatile cartridge the 7mm remington mag seemed to be a favorite but for the reloader I can't imagine any better cartridge for hunting all game "other than bison" on this continent. For the mountains a 110 gr ttsx at 3600-3700 fps would be awesome! then 165 grain for bigger game, especially with a faster twist barrel. All of this with manageable recoil. The 270 weatherby is an awesome cartridge. :)

28 Nosler 8 lbs scoped.Could have made it lighter but 8 lbs well balanced carries like a dream

Not the cartridge for me. I've already replaced a few barrels on a 300 RUM. No need to add another barrel burner to my stable. I love the old 270 win and 270 WSM. I hope this helps with the creation of better high BC hunting bullets. Although the 145 grain eld-x and 140 Berger vld hunting are not terrible. I haven't tried any of the Long range accubonds.
