The New Ruger American Rifle for spring 2012

What do you think of the new Ruger American Rifle?

Looks interesting for an under $500 rifle. It kinda makes me think of a Tikka/Savage & Ruger Hybrid.

The bolt looks like a bit like an old Remington 725 with its large diameter.

I wonder how it will compare to Savage and Remington rifles in the same Price Range.

I agree with bryan.
It does look like a hybrid from tika with a savage trigger.

The receiver and bolt are very similar to tika's:
bolt release is the same
bolt has the similar three prong locking lugs and the rear looks identical to the tikas
has an similar cocking indicator.

The trigger is the only thing savage like.

Do like the removable magazine.

Remove the plastic and put some wood on it, and it would look very nice

No lots of people are not liking the direction the market is going. When people at work or wherever ask about such and such a gun I tell them to buy good used quality and leave the plastic unfinished crap at the gun store. Then they get a gun that will keep working for years and have resale value.

But I also see the need to own many guns of different calibers and these cheaper guns seem to shoot well.

Just not for me

I'm in the same boat, why on earth would somebody buy one of these when for a day's wages more you can get a Hawkeye? TWK

There aren't many of us, but you're not alone.

My biggest concern is that now that they've entered the welfare rifle market, Ruger will start to see the 77 as more of a premium rifle and price them accordingly.

While I don't think the 77 will climb price wise, I agree with the sentiment. I also find it sad the rifle their current marketing team decided to title "The American" is the cheapest, bargain basement, use it and chuck it wares. I suppose that's the way America's been going a long time, I just thought Ruger better than the trend and even bucking it. Bill Ruger Sr. would want no part of this... :redface:
 
It's puketastic to look at. I have no interest really, but I am sure everyone on the internet will be shooting 1" groups at a mile with them using only blue box as soon as the are released.
To each their own.
 
A downgraded M77 MKII is the Hawkeye, and now a cheaper version... I would have rather seen an upgraded Hawkeye with a better trigger and a steel box magazine.
 
Well I'd rather have a 77 myself. When I think Ruger bolt action, I will always think Model 77.

3-lug short throw is kind of interesting in this price range and it IS a Ruger so I'll take it long before I take a Savage, Stevens, or Marlin. And I sorta want a .243 sporter for a backup coyote/deer gun. And it comes with bases to eliminate one of the headaches of buying a new-to-market rifle.

So the short of it is I might buy one if they come in under $500, but only because it suits the price range for a "gap filler" and it's a Ruger.
