My 92 doesn't have any outstanding figure in the stock but is a good grade of WALNUT, which is getting harder to find in stocks these days. I have owned several marlins and seen many more and have yet to see one with any figure what-so-ever, like rem338 says so plain as to be comparable to beech. In my 70 some odd old Win levers, I have maybe one or two that show any figure, just good solid well grained walnut is the rule and the new ones are the same. I have seen several of the new 94s with what I would call decent grain and a cut above the norm, a little figure or swirl and the inletting is as good or better than my pre 64s. I also agree with Kilo Charlie, if she wants a new rifle, then a new rifle it should be, and I would never recommend a Marlin or Mossberg (God forbid) over the new 94. This is a case where you really are getting what you pay for. Something else no one has yet mentioned, the Marlin does not feel or handle like the 94, two totally different feeling guns in my opinion. The Marlin is much thicker and clubbier feeling, big fat forend and much fatter through the grip, I have never felt the affinity to the Marlin that I do to the old Winchesters. I love lever guns and their numbers in my vault approach 100 and not one has a different name than Winchester, I will say, I do like the old straight stock, schnabel forend Savages too, in 250 and 300 but I have decided to focus on Wins and have had to check myself from straying several times when a nice old Savage showed up. But I digress, buy the nice lady a new 94 and she will have a high quality rifle she can be proud of as can her daughters and grandaughters, if that is to be. You are getting value for your money in the new Miroku Winchesters, far more in my opinion than the Ubertis or Piettas or Pedersolis of the same cost or more. This is more of an apples to apples comparison than Marlin or Mossberg.
