The Non locked CZ 600+ Carbine Thread

I had emailed CZ last year about the possibility of a Grendel barrel. They replied that there were no current plans on their part to offer the Grendel, which is disappointing. Besides Howa and Ruger, no one is doing the Grendel for a hunting round... Not even Savage!

Definitely way closer to a lux than an alpha though but for my wallets sake I hope you are right. Still wish there was a 308 option tho...
Is 308 really useful with an 18" barrel as a hunting rifle? You' d be losing about 300-400fps vs the standard 24" barrel.
Or is it close nuff for govt work?

16" is where .308 starts to get kind of annoying, at least to me. Another reason I curse not being able to legally own a suppressor.
They got rid of smoking in bars because of the health risks it possed to workers getting exposed to second hand smoke... it's not quite the same but forcing people to be exposed to louder then necessary noises that can cause ear damage over time is silly. Plus many ranges in urban areas have issues with noise complaints..... we have the technology to address this issue but the govts refuse to catch up with the times!

I think we will likely see suppressors allowed in Canada at some point in the future.

The anti's like to use other countries like New Zealand to point out restrictions that we should adopt.... I guess they should be open to allowing suppressors in Canada if the Kiwi's are doing it, though I have a feeling they would not see it that way as blind as they are to common sense.

How did that play out in the end? Did they back away from participating or did they participate?

Colt Canada's bread and butter is govt sales so I can see a world where they might go along with the people that butter their bread... but I never really understood how the whole story developed and how or if it ended?

I think your not alone in harbouring bad feelings toward CZ due to Colt Canada's decision at the time, down south there is a solidarity that keeps firearms business in line with the second amendment.... In Canada we don't have that same culture or amendment unfortunately.

We all have our own standards when it comes to who we deal with.... if I was hardcore in not dealing with people with questionable business practices I might not buy anything in Canada imported by NS.

The federal government is keeping the contractor information confidential citing security. CZ has not denied that they're contracted for destruction of rifles. Which basically confirms that they're doing it.

Unfortunately for me I can't support them and I tell all my friends not to either. I hope in the future I'll be able to buy one. I love the idea of user swappable barrels on a controlled feed action.

Their solution is just to ban all guns. There. No more problem

To me suppressors would definitely be the next real evolution in hunting rifle in Canada, I can care less if all the new magical cartridges coming out but suppressors just make sense.
That said I would have to get a few guns threaded…

Nice rifle. The 7.62x39 would be the ticket for me but that 10round mag is a deal killer. It's useless unless one is headed off to war.
It's funny I never really picked up on the 10 round mags..... :). They make flush mags as well and given that they are double stack they don't hang down like the old ones did with 5 rounds.
The locking magazine system is a good idea and well designed for a gun where mags don't need to "drop free" for a tactical reload!

Drop free while hunting is never really a good day and the locking tab that can be used or not used is a pretty well thought out to prevent accidental release.

I actually don't mind magazines that drop down below the stock on bolt action guns, I might not need to fully load them but I use the extended magazine as a vertical grip aid to stablize the gun with my front hand while working the bolt through it's journey that tends to twist the gun as it goes.

The new model will satisfy flush or protruding fans.

I had a couple of 527 Carbines in .223 and x39, liked them both but did not care for the feel of the magazines sticking out. I never got one of the flushmount mags and eventually sold both guns. They were very enjoyable little guns, until their popularity allowed the prices to skyrocket, especially after they were discontinued. When a product offers fantastic value-per-dollar, that becomes one of the main facets of its appeal. When demand sends the price through the roof...too many people just have to have one...and then they forget that one of the main charms of the gun has disappeared.

Have a 600 Alpha now with generally very positive feelings about it. I love the locking flushmount mag, and the new safety is great. Trigger pull is wonderful as well, and accuracy excellent. The long barrel with a .223 is...different. I bought the gun despite the 24-inch tube, not because of it...but it is noticeably quieter to shoot than an 18 or 20 and that's nice. I considered having the tube cut to 18.5 but never moved on it, and now I doubt that I would. This gun is, for me, strictly a coyote rifle, so the extra length doesn't really have any negatives in practical use.

This new 600 is very appealing; if I get one I may or may not sell the Alpha, I can probably rationalize keeping both...:)

Personally, I think that CZ made a mistake by not giving this mini-action rifle a different model number/name. I think that "model 627" Alpha, Carbine, Trail, etc. would still keep the kinship with the larger 600 guns obvious, but would also harken back to the 527 and make it clear that it's strictly for tiny cartridges. Always makes me chuckle when a maker comes out with a rifle specifically scaled and designed for .223-length cartridges and the first thing we hear is "Why not in .308?" Using the same model number for the various sized actions just encourages that confusion.

So, okay...I'll be the first: chrome-lined? :)
