Hi folks,

I’ve decided to take a blind leap of faith into the world of the M1 Garand. I’ve never shot one, and only recently held one. I received some great advice from fellow CGNers on the topic, and now its time to start collecting parts and getting to it.

Like most gun nuts I’ve always wanted a Garand, and I finally feel I’m at a point in my milsurp collecting where I NEED one. I’m planning on shooting this rifle regularly, it certainly will not be a safe queen. As such I’m more concerned with reliably and potential for accuracy.

Here is the basic game plan:

I want to build a reliable, decent looking shooter. I’m not interested in matching part numbers or even manufacturers, function is my first priority, form and cost are tied for second place.

I come from the car world, so the term “build” isn’t used lighly in my household. I won’t be buying a parts kit and shipping it off for assembly. I’ll be sourcing every part myself, refinishing wood, and assembling the rifle myself with the exception of headspacing and chamber reaming. These are safety related items I will not dable in.

I’m looking forward to this build, I’ll update this thread as I progress.

Anyone have experience with NM marked rear sights? I found one from a not so popular former site sponsor for $120. At that price point it seems to be the best bang for the buck option available.

July 5 update

More parts arrived today, these came from a CGN user. Looks like I have sourced most of the required parts, just need to hide the incoming packages from the Mrs.... this was supposed to be a “3-6month” project.

The mail carrier is getting sick of ringing my doorbell I think.

Oprod, Oprod spring and follower arm arrived today. Really happy with the condition of the parts I’ve received so far, doesn’t look like I’ll need to have anything reparked. I’m on budget and waaaaay ahead of schedule.

Next step is to clean the cosmo off of everything and do a proper inspection of each part. Then I’ll be sending the bolt, receiver and barrel to Nick @ Vulcan for chambering, barrel installation and head spacing.

Good luck to you, in the late '90's I bought a Korean Garand for $127 Cdn. First smoothbore .30-06 that I ever seen. By the time I replaced everything that needed replacing and initially for a gunsmith who didn't know how to install a new Garand barrel properly, I had invested about $1,600 (for parts, installation and shipping fees). Hope yours is more reasonably priced. I do recommend going with a NM front sight, it will make you a lot happier.
