I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts are (good and bad) about the Howas, Tc ventures and Icons? Looking for a varmint rifle. Would they be worth my time or just go with the tried trusted and true?
 
Get a bottom end Savage and never look back. I got the 11 Package gun in .243 for $399 and it shoots great. I'm junking the scope and putting on a 4-16x50 but for $399 it is a steal. Plus you get all the advantages of the Savage action.

Icons are wonderfull accurate, smooth operating, sweet trigger and well finish rifle, they are a well kept secret, all the one i own are shooter... JP.
 
I looked at an Icon and was extremely impressed. Big thick bolt and thick receiver. The whole action looked stiff like a custom. The laminate stock was well built and stiff. I don`t know about their bbl quality, the owner of the one I handled said it shot crazy good. It was a heavy bbl 22-250

Years ago I bought one (Howa) because a customer had accidentally ordered the bull barreled .223 instead of the regular one. These aren't expensive rifles but I got a really good deal because no one wanted it at the time. It has been my go to varmint rifle for years. I installed a Timney trigger and it shoots just under 1 moa with any bullet between 45 and 55 grs.
As has been said here, good value for the money.

I played with one and was impressed with how it felt over built. It was extremely heavy for a sporter though, to me anyways and I thought the magazine was gross. It was after they first came out and I thought they were extrememly flimsy for such a solid rifle. I hope their better now.
 
My Icon in 243 is as accurate as my Cooper. They're great rifles for the money, check out their site for all the features they have... Can't speak to the Howas as I've never held one.
 
Venture=round reciever
Icon= flat bottom/milled.
I have a Weathershield Icon, I like it- it's a great value, no complaints; it's quality kit.
Handled/played with a few Howa's, they're another good value. I've only steered clear of the platform due to a lack of DM's (now available) and stainless (?).
 
My only experiences with TC rifles have let me wanting. For both I had to add a slip-on recoil pad to lengthen the pull and a strap-on adjustable comb to raise the stock for the scopes. They seemed more like kids stocks rather than an adult. Until I added the slip-on stuff, they shot like crap. That being said, my wife sure liked them and they shot well for her.
 
ive been looking for one of these Howas (just the rifle not the package), but seems noone in Canada stocks them:

I have been looking to and have turned up nothing. Alot of dealers used to sell Howas, but they are hard to track down these days.

I was told it was because Weatherby wanted the Canadian market share but you know how Gunshop gossip is.

I got mine from Barton's Big Country Outdoors in Grande Prairie.
Hmmm it was the package, but iirc they had the rifle only for sale as well.
