The numbers of SKS owners in Canada

First , the RCMP have not gotten away with any prohibiting of the CZ or Swiss Arms rifles . They are not going to either . Next , " they " can call a SKS or my 10/22 an " assault rifle " if they so choose but there is not going to be any ban on semis . There must be millions of semis in this country and we , the owners , are now getting info faster then ever before . The response to the RCMPs power play was swift and overwhelming . Every time they try to pull any of this crap , the response will be a loud NO by the population of gun owners in this country . I , an many others refuse to accept being criminalized for owning a tool .
As someone mentioned earlier , even the Libs , when in power , knew that banning semis would be a fruitless endeavour . No one is coming for your semis .

Well said. A voice of reason.

Agreed...and just to be safe let's keep the left threaded wing nuts out of office in Ottawa...

Dagmaar,

Yes, it makes sense what you're saying. I just wonder how it happened in UK, when they were able to ban all semis including handguns. I was trying to research on it, but there are no any detailed info as to how technically it was done. Was it because the gun owners were not so proactive to respond? Small number of guns and respectively gun owners? Lack of info about whats coming? No internet (1987)? Strong anti's?
I mean how we are different here?

Thank you for your opinions.

I'm specifically looking into some customized SKS worth of $500-600, but I hesitate to invest into something which might have pretty good chances to be turned into paperweight or be delivered to RCMP for free.

Ok, so you have some firearms that you have upgraded and are apparently worth thousands, implying you are a gentleman of some means, but you hesitate financially because you may take a (very)theoretical loss on a customized SKS that may be work $600? Have you looked at other available semi-auto centerfire options recently? Even the cheapest bone stock new norc m305 goes for $500-600 these days.
Incidentally, the RCMP now offer free pick up service :)

Ha ha well said, smart and to the point. I accept that some who are of means get their by being cheap, which I suspect is the case here.

I have enough guns to stop buying more. I want to stay reasonable in every matter and never invest alot into same type of thing. Especially considering the possibility of loosing the thing. Even if it is as dirt cheap as SKS.

HMMM. how many are being sold every day? I believe there are/will be enough sks alone, to make it almost impossible for the feds to ban them, the sks is the common mans semi auto and because it was/is so cheap and so much fun to shoot and play with, there would be huge pushback! The government, when presented with the sheer numbers of owners, would realize it would be political suicide to ban them. Add in all the other semis out there and strength in numbers is where it's at!
Based on the #s being tossed around here I will stick with my guess of 120,000-140,000 units in Canada, both in the hands of citizens and distributors!

Yeah, true. But! People would be more willing to give up their $200 SKS apposed to a $1000+ semi-auto. Best bet is to keep buying AR-15s (or just many lowers) even if they are restricted. It's actually better that way. More owners equals more houses to visit(raid) which leads to increased potential resistance and increased legal system back log. In the end, one big pain in the ass for the government... depending. The Australians managed to do it.

all of them Laugh2 I don't think it could be counted I have a few myself and just about every other own I know has at least one some of us bought crates of them back when they were cheaper :p

there is probably more guns buried in Australia then most know of with a country so wide spread you really think everyone gave in

... How many rifles in a crate??... I know a few people that want SKSs. I can boost that number.

I bought a crate of 10 in the early 90's for $750.00 gave one away used one, and the rest of the eight are still in the crate in the garage rafters, other than cheap they offer very little else,
