the official why i didnt get a deer thread

Wasn't feeling it this year. Saw lots of little bucks, which I would normally pop, everytime I lined up on one I heard the old lady #####ing about eating deer meat for 5 years in a row. So I let them walk. Did a fair bit of small game hunting though and really enjoyed it, plus I plan on doing quite a bit of yote hunting this winter.

Probably because I'm a bad hunter? Still working on that whole 'quiet' thing.

Also, we were in a whitetail-only WMU that apparently had nothing but mulies :(

all i gotta say is it sucks to be you guys that arent doing well:evil::p

i bagged a little buck a couple days ago before noticing the 2 mature does that were the opposite direction. around that same time my dad was watching 6 mature does in a field that were just out of bow range. none of these deer included the 2 decent bucks (judging from rubs/scrapes/tracks) so there are at least 10 deer left in the small bush we hunt.

i dont think coyotes have as much of an impact on deer populations like some of you are saying. i spent a lot of time in a bush that had high deer and coyote populations for the size of the bush and not once found coyote scat with deer hair in it. thats over 10 years of hunting that bush.

crappy weather and harsh winters are more to blame than coyotes for the so called decreased deer numbers which could actually just be the deer arent moving around as much due to warmer weather.

EDIT: also, dont forget that warmer temps have left the corn standing for longer than normal in some areas. deer almost live in standing corn when they get pushed too hard which is why some of you may not be seeing them in the bush like usual for this time of year.

I've never hunted so hard for so little.

Me too! the only deer I've seen this year have been in the ditch or running across the road as I'm going by in the van!

Guess thats why it's hunting and not calling killing... having bad luck, lost my only buck call(grunt) one day, a different day my one piece base came lose on my 270 of course the one under the ring then I stripped the ring screw because base was moving so much, so had to drill off the ring... so off to the store for new bases and rings...ARGH! also this week, one of my tree stands is now blocked by a HUGE fallen pine. I'm going to leave it til the season is done no point in chainsawing a tree in what I think is my best hunting spot with less then a month to go!

Sad thing is my wife is seeing deer going to and from work almost daily me I sitting & walking in the bush with a wet ass seeing nothing!
I've pulled out all the stops too, now I'm so desperate was just out this afternoon and laid a trail of CODE BLUE synthetic doe piss I bought today. hope of luring in something other then yotes and wolves... this evening I will sneak back down and first thing in the morning! :ninja:

I have less then a month left in my season.

Should have used your muzzleloader, you would have got him :p

I shot a 3 point (28 yards, muzzleloader)...on Sat (14th)...definitely not the one I was looking for, but it's a good cull-buck. (I'll post a pic when I get a chance)

Saw 3 deer in 2 weeks (shot 1)...Lots of sign...No daytime activity...Too many yotes.

Can't wait til Nov 30.

Too much work and not enough play. Plus I didn't get a doe tag. Plus deer populations are significantly down from previous years in Lanark County ON. I know we have until Christmas but realistically muzzleloader season is my last chance!!

Some deer sign, but far less than usual.

1. WAY too warm
2. WAY too clear. I have always believed that the overcast, longer sunrise days seem to get the deer out more...don't kow why though. This week, its been so clear it goes from dark to ful light seemingly instantly.

For 11 hunters, after two days we have 5

Lots of deer in MB this year. But I would say the whole rut/behavior pattern is about 3 weeks late.

Every year I try to get to MB to visit my dad and hunt deer with him. Usually I try for opening week and friday of that week is my self imposed end of season. Most times I hope to have a deer down by Wednesday to give me a bit of time for butchering before I make my way home.

This year I saw 11 deer in the first 3 days. Buck #3 spotted on Monday was a monster, and I passed up other deer the next few days hoping to get another glimpse of him. No such luck. Buck #11 presented himself at 200 yards in the last few minutes of legal shooting on Wednesday. Small horns but a decent body. Bang flop with a 180BT from my 300WM.

Ironically:rolleyes:, I happen to get a second buck in Saskatchewan on the way back west Sunday night on highway #16 just east of maidstone. Hit it the first time at close range with a 21,000,000gr Dodge Silvertip at about 108fps.

The bullet retained about 99.999% of it's weight.

That "slow" bullet created quite the "bang-skid" but a second shot from my 300wm was required to finish it off.;)
