The old tape over muzzle trick

Have used electrical tape for years....with enough wrapped around barrel , 2" below muzzle, for a few spares .Never noticed any difference in POI .

I use a small mini cocktail umbrella - just open the umbrella and stick it in. Accuracy may suffer slightly but the animals are laughing so hard you can generally get pretty close and it doesn't matter.
Hey, I'll give that a try...
Foxer, I just about pissed myself.

Hey, I like that earplug idea for cold weather when the tape doesn't stick so well...

I make my living as an electrician and I can assure you that all electrical tape is not created equal. The cheap crap will not stick well and will break easily at low temperatures. That isn't a problem if you use scotch 88.

Electrical tape.
I took a fall a couple of years ago and I brushed the snow off my gun and then myself and continued hunting. The next morning I was looking at my gun and realized there was a plug of mud in the end of the barrel. My bad for not spotting it when I took the header.
If I would have seen anything the day before it could have turned into an mess.

I was lowering a Shotgun from a tree stand and the rope broke... 12 feet straight down and it stuck in the ground like a tomato stake :(
Tape would not have helped in this circumstance... I had to recrown the barrel  ... but tape or condoms work great for keeping moisture and other foreign material out of the barrel... especially with Muzzle Loaders.

No problem with the ear plugs freezing or getting wet. They completely seal of the barrel keeping moisture out. If the gun is wet, I take mine out at night when I'm cleaning up the gun and replace it in the morning. The colder it gets, the harder the ear plugs get, making it easier to remove it. I've hunted many times in below zero temps, freezing rain, etc., without a problem. IMHO earplugs are vastly superior to electrical tape, based on many years of outings with both. They are really inexpensive also.

Another trick I use is to carry a small roll of gauze, and weedeater cord twice as long as my barrel. If I need to clean out my barrel in the field, I just double the weedeater cord and pull the gauze patch through. Voila, clean barrel in the field. I've used this trick twice while guiding moose hunters. The roll of gauze doubles for patching up a small cut should one occur. :D

Anyone else got any good field tricks? :?:

Just yesterday I slipped on a steep hill and dropped my new 300WSM in to the soft dirt, muzzle first.

No harm done as I had taped it up!

OK Clark, where do you keep getting these pics of "girls gone wild" out in the bush? What the hells going on down there in Pemberton? I better come see for myself!

Whats the Arabic sig line say too? :?

Yes that is one thing to be careful of using the finger condoms, they trap moister againts the barrel. After a long wet day of hunting I have seen rust showing under the condom(only place it was present).

I use the finger condoms as well and yes it is important to remove as soon as your back at camp because of trapped moisture.

That's the reason I use REAL condoms.
Mind you , be careful. KY is water based/soluble, so therefore is a good rust starter.
Get a trojan - unlubricated. The powder coating will keep the moisture away.
They must come in camo color too.

the ridiculous aspect of your rifle will also help one keep it away from their face.
You have no idea how many "hunters" forget about the loading they did in the morning.... and by dusk they find relief in leaning on the rifle or place it under their chin....
no sane (male) individual would let a "covered" muzzle get this close to their kisser.

I never felt the need for sticking something over my barrel. I don't walk with my rifle slung very often so I'm not worried about my barrel filling with water. If I drop my rifle I look at it and clean out the barrel,I don't just pick it up and continue hunting hoping some little condom is going to keep out dirt.
