Hi Everyone,

Just thought I'd make a thread about what I believe is the only Restricted class Type 81 in Canada.

I am the owner of this registered, restricted rifle and interested to find more history on it.

My rifle is the exact one featured in an October 2017 publication of Calibre Magazine. (Have a look at the link, very good pictures)

I reached out to Tactical Imports, the importer of these rifles, for any info on this particular one.

The CEO of TI replied and said that my T81 is:

-The only restricted one
-Was the original prototype for Canada used for classification
-Was Imported to Canada in August 2012 and submitted to the RCMP lab
-Was approved by the RCMP in January 2016

It's also interesting to note it's:

-The only regular T81 with phosphate finish (Before the Sept 2021 "Special Edition" ones)
-The only T81 with a distinct grenade barrel attachment
-Wood parts, bolt and bolt carrier appear to be "Military surplus in look and feel" compared to brand new T81's
-Distinct serial number
-Registered as "Commercial Version"
-Has a 441mm / 17.4 inch barrel (The only reason it's restricted)

Here's a video from April 2016 (3 months after RCMP approval) on TI's YouTube channel.
(Yes, the wood stock looks dark in the video but TI said it's the same rifle and wood, just the sunlight makes it look dark)

I purchased this rifle from an individual on another internet forum who said he purchased it from TI. When the transfer was in process the CFP told me this rifle was still labeled as "Protected Custody" and the transfer may take longer than usual. The transfer was approved in a normal time frame. I learned that "Protected Custody" meant that the firearm was previously stored at an RCMP location. (Probably still labeled that in the system from when it was under RCMP lab review between August 2012 and January 2016)

I also found some pictures of this rifle here on CGN from November 2016. Apparently it did have a darker set of wood installed in 2016:

I also found this websight with more pictures of this rifle when it was displayed at the Toronto Sportsman Show 2016:

Not sure it being restricted is something sought after or generally desired.

Like saying i have the rustiest Chevrolet Cavalier in America...

Its history is interesting though.

I mean he has the most original correct Type 81 rifle in Canada. Same reason why even though the M1 carbine is restricted it's more correct for collectors to have it in it's original configuration rather than bastardized with a longer barrel.

I'm not so sure that this is the original barrel. More likely a prototype barrel with an one-off muzzle without the ribbed sleeve. The original military version of the type 81 rifle has the ribbed grenade launcher sleeve similar to the production unrestricted guns imported to Canada.

Very cool rifle, just sad that for an inch of too much barrel length that it can't be transferred to uncle Mike in Canmore when the time comes. I doubt he will ever get his RPAL.

Don't have a bayonet yet. Prob would fit perfect.

i can tell from your pic of the GL that the bayo wont fit cos it doesnt have the grove at the bottom of the GL.

there is a lug inside the bayo ring that goes into the grove.

btw. neither yours or ours are original GL, you got fewer ribbings, same as the ones made for the US way back. ours has more also no grove for bayo .

Great looking rifle!
Too bad it is restricted...in the event of a ban, this would likely be the only confiscated T81 in Canada.
