For Elk and Moose?

444 marlin :)
Oh, really?

Well years ago I was loading Hornaday 225. gr. and had a point blank range,. e.g., hold + right on out to 340 yds, based on the bullet not being more than 5" from line of sight, for 10" diameter boiler room.

So, m1978, what's your predicted point blank range using my 10" target, for the .444?

(Yes, I had a .444 Marlin and should have kept it)

And I had a good 7MM Mag that I sold.

One more point, the .338 WM, at least my W70, will shoot, a GC bullet of linotype very accurately.

So, m1978, what's your predicted point blank range using my 10" targe, for the .444? (Yes, I had a .444 Marlin and should have kept it)

As for the .375 will it fit in a standard action like the .338? Not an H & H
for sure, or am I not up-to-date on the newer calibers?

The new .375 Ruger produces .375 H&H velocities (300 gr @ 2600 fps) from a standard .30/06 length action. This results in a rifle that is shorter by the difference in the length of the two cartridges, but the cost saving of the standard length action would seem to be the only tangible benefit.

9.3 x 62 or 9.3 x 64 with 286 gr whatevers
Power, little recoil, good smack down... perfect

or any other caliber that you can shoot -- just hit the things!

I shot my elk with a 378 weatherby, knocked it down really quick. I shoot it because I can. Picked up a 340 and I will knock elk down with it i'm sure. As I have always said, shot placement is the key. 30-06, 270, 7mm, 300 will all do the job as well. What ever you feel the most comfotable with go with it.

I'm going to be using my 45-70 T/C Contender carbine this year with ultra modern 525gr Beartooth WLNGC's @ 1450fps or 550gr Jae-Bok Young WLNGC "Crater's" @ 1380fps I'm going to sight it in for 400 yards.

Don't worry I'll practice a lot before I shoot @ a moose and I guarantee that those bullets will pass right thru... :D :slap:

Are you kidding me? You must be really bored and looking for something challenging to do.

I have hunted moose with my 45/70 but within the 100 yard range using the 350 gr Hornady bullets.

I couldn’t help but wonder what if you misjudged a 450 yard moose thinking it is 400 yards. The difference in a 525 gr bullet drop must be over 4-5 feet if not more at that range.

Can someone with a ballistic calculator help out here? What speed and energy is there at 400 yards?:confused::confused:

Here I'll give you one so you can do it yourself http://www.biggameinfo.com/index.aspx?page=/balcalc.ascx :D

Yep bored and having fun at the expense of another thread were the masters can make 400 yard kill shots everytime they fire a round at an animal because they have the range finding ballistic equipment to make the shot.

I'm thinking that if I can back up to exactly 400 yards from the moose it is doable though... :slap:

Oh really ??.....My old 375 Browning Safari is a standard-length Mauser action and other companies used Mauser actions for the H&H chamberings....

45-70 550gr WLNGC .200 BC 1450fps

375 yards = +16.9"
400 yards = 0.0 +- 0
425 yards = -19.8"

I'm good...

WLNGC = hard cast wide meplet long nose (from crimp to meplat) with gas checks.
