Please change the title to read "Optimum". I don't think optimal is a real word. If it is, it shouldn't be! Regards, Bill.

Out of the 2000-3000 rounds that I go through each year I may practice 20%-25% of those at the 200 and 300 yard ranges at the club.

While I have a good range finder plus B&C and Varmint Hunter reticle scopes on my meat guns, I never feel comfortable shoot beyond 300 yards. The animal movement, wind, temperature…. variations are too great to get consistent results.

Let’s say I am from the old school, unless I am 100% sure that I am making a kill shot I wouldn’t pull the trigger. Hitting the moose at 400 is not that difficult but killing it with the same shot I am not too confident. The success rate at our camp is 100% for the last 5 years and we love moose meat in our family.

Well, this is Internet. Folks can say what they want to say. The unfortunate part is that these claims give the newbies the wrong impression.
 
Of the chamberings listed I would pick the 300 Win Mag.

Otherwise if I could use only only one cartridge I would pick the 375 H&H.

FYI 200 yards is my max when shooting anything with my 45-70's and I would not be using the 550gr bullets either I would be loaded with my 350gr Swift A-Frames @ 1750fps - 1800fps in the Contender or 2000fps in my Marlin.

- I read of traditional black powder conical shooters/hunters say that with such a large flat nose, it will push alot of hair as it travels thru the animal. I imagine that the initial energy transfer when it hits the animal would cause some quite impressive knock down power!!

I guess you folks are saying .270 is not bigg enough. So the bigger the better like a .338 - our top choice.

Like most of us, we own many firearms. There is always one specific rifle (plus a spare for some of us) or each occasion.

If ya mean like this one, my wife's vote is for the 30-06 with a 150 grain TSX at 2840ft/sec. We call them her "Pink Bullets" because the recoil is so mild she enjoys shooting them.

One shot at 60 yards -- dropped at the shot, and never moved a muscle. 338 or 375 indeed! :redface:

Put a good bullet where it is supposed to go, and yer eating moose meat -- every time!

Heck, she put this cow down with a 90 gr X bullet out of a 243 at 3200 ft/sec. One shot = no lungs left.

Remember a good bullet into the vitals = dead moose. The cow went about 25' before keeling over dead.
 
I have used the 270 in the past to harvest four moose, all did the trick. One with 30-06. This falls lead pill is from a 338 Federal, but I am a fan of the 6.5x55 as well and wouldn't feel undergunned with it with a 160 grain bullet.
 
i have used the 300 win mag, but just sold it to my brother to get the 7mm-08 remington! which will be my deer-moose gun! You dont need the thumping thunder magnum for shooting moose at 30 feet!!! jusy use good bullets and shoot whatever distance you can make a good clean shot!

Sold off my .338 Mag after I combined the top two picks, the .338 & .30-06 and built me a lightweight .338-06 for my primary moose/elk rifle. Waaay nicer to carry and has more than enough range & punch for any rut charged mature bull moose or elk.
 
Handgun hunting for big game........the only way to go.

My name is in for both the Maine & New Hampshire moose draws this year.

If I luck out in either draw I will be taking my T/C Icon in .300 Win. Mag. and my Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 Casull as well as my S&W Model 29 (.44 Mag.) on the hunt.

If I spot a moose at close range I'll take it with a handgun.

Got my deer in Maine with a handgun in the fall of 2007.

There isn't anything quite like handgun hunting.
