The 'other 2 Mausers' or 'Look ma I made me a purdy shootin stick!'

Ummmm.. ok - on close inspection - this 71/84 is not a cut down stock, it's from something else altogether [it's actually quite poorly fitted] So, hoping for some real luck here... how can I tell if this could have been the carbine version? [hoping bubba didn't cut the barrel, just replaced the fore-site!]

Here is what a Model 71 Cavalry Carbine looks like:

Is it similar to yours? If yours is a 71/84, it most likely is Bubba-ed...

I agree - most likely, however I was hoping... the stock I have on this one is definitely not from a 71/84 if I look at it top down, there are extra relief cuts in the sides for a different shaped [stepped] receiver. I'm hoping that bubba somehow got hold of a carbine & changed the stock.

the differences I see are the extra sling hold in my trigger guard [not sure it's matched to the rest of the parts anyway] and the barrel band - it's in the wrong location for either & it's been pinned right through.

What I need is a good view of the front of the barrel on the carbine sans the cap, looking at my site, it appears as though the barrel has been rotated 180 degrees and what looks like was once a lug has been filed into the front site [poorly! it's crooked!!] The magazine actually looks un-tampered with.

so pretty much I need to find out:

- is there a lug [or lugs] on the front of the carbine barrel
- what is it's correct length

totally grasping at straws here... ;)

The parade sling hold is the standard 71/84 configuration. The Carbine parts are probably 10-100x rarer than the rifle, you'd have never found them!

Yea - I'm about to give up on this silly daydream... carbines were made by Steyr apparently & the barrel is too long in proportion to the magazine to be a 'short' model... and the rear site appears too long to be either of them.

ho-hum... oh well, patience is the name of the game, the parts will turn up sooner or later - best to just wait.
